Broke the fuel filler cover when filling up this evening ready for Daventry trip tomorrow. :'( Does removing the two screws release the arm part and where is a good place to get a replacement assy? Also is the fuel safe from syphoning when the cover is off? Colour is Z489 but any light colour will do will just paint it

Can be removed by undoing the 2 screws and then remove the black hinged part.
The arms are quite weak so your not alone as bust mine on previous Elite by pushing it open abit too hard.

A breakers yard, someone breaking one on here,e-bay for a second hand one.new I would imagine you'd be looking dealer only?I thought all cars built after a certain date[can't remember what date though]well before your 51 plate car would've been built, had some kind of anti syphon device in the filler neck?Even if I'm correct on that I still couldn't swear to how effective they are.

Petrol syphoning? Bit yesterday isn't it? ;D

Know what you mean Stemo, not worth the effort these days with petrol prices falling as they are.But then of course there's always one that'll try for it.

I syphonned all the petrol out of my estate (nearly a tankful) before scrapping it, no trouble at all.
Be aware that saloon filler flaps are not the same as estate filler flaps. A search on e-bay should find you the right flap in the right colour, especially if its silver. I think the word CAR is on the estate flaps, but check with the one you broke.

What would you write on the saloon ones, if not "CAR"? "BUS"? "RHINOCEROUS"?

It says LIM on the saloon filler flaps. May be German, or possibly American, LIMousine or CARavan. Anyway, they look jolly similar, but they won't fit on the wrong vehicles.

It may be that plastic thing in the filler orifice is not anti-siphon, but to prevent you putting diesel in petrol cars as the nozzle won't go in.

Limousine and Caravan :y

I always thought a diesel nozzle had a greater girth (fnarr) to prevent misfuelling? Hence so many people putting petrol in a diesel as the nozzle will slide in with room to spare (...stop sniggering)...

The only way to prevent misfuelling is revert 1000years so there are no engines that require fuel. Plenty of people manage to put diesel into petrol tanks too. The professional term for these people is oppswit

Got the replacement flap assy in today, that one said CAR where mine said LIM but it fitted spot on so well pleased. :y
-
I am glad it fitted, but a bit surprised. I bought one off e-bay for my 2.5 estate, it was labelled LIM and it did not fit. I had to find one marked CAR to fit my estate. Puzzling.

I think the small diameter nozzles were introduced for unleaded petrol to dissuade people from putting 4* in cars that needed unleaded.
Getting petrol mixed up with diesel wasn't a problem then as the diseasel pump was sited over on the far side of a piece of oily concrete where it belonged ;)

If the choice is limousine ie saloon or car ie caravan/estate then the filler cap labelled 'car' is correct for your estate
-
Yep, Caravan = Estate, Limousine = Saloon.
Not sure what they call a weekend pikey wagon. ???
