Title: Microsoft plan to screw over all its OneDrive Customers.
Post by: zirk on 19 December 2015, 16:53:25
So in the early part of the New Year some changes will happen to your free and some paid for OneDrive Cloud accounts, MS has announced it will reduce the Free 30gb OneDrive Cloud storage to a mere 5gb.

So guessing most people will be on the existing 30gb (Free 15gb + 15gb Bonus Camera Roll) and not realising there Cloud data contents will be at risk in the not so distant future.

Other changes will be to scrap the 100 and 200gb paid for accounts with a 50gb paid for and 1000gb, the later will only be available with an yearly Office subscription.

But there's hope, you can manually opt in to keep your free 30gb account, something MS aren't shouting about too loudly from the roof tops.

Click on this link before the 31st Jan https://preview.onedrive.com/bonus/ and by agreeing to allow MS to email you news and offers, they will let you keep your allowance, you will need to use the link for every free account you have individually.   ;)

If you don't have any free OneDrive Clouds, I suggest you get one / some now.  :y ;)

Thanks for the heads up  :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y

I've clicked link and applied it to my account, I'm using around 18Gb of my OneDrive.

I did have 50Gb's from Dropbox, one of the work phones came with 48Gb free for 2 years, but that just expired.

Glad it helps tunnie.

Also if anyone hasn't got the +15gb Camera Roll Bonus, then do that now as well, just load a picture up to cloud on Camera Roll you only need to do it once and its sorted.  :y

That's the one, MS call it Camera Roll  ;)

Soon as its finished uploading, l would download them again and put them somewhere else, at the least that way your know they be somewhere safe.  ;D ;D ;D

I bought a five user subscription for Office 2013 earlier this year, each pc has 1 Tb of One drive storage included, suits me as I use Office a lot.

Knowing my luck that will be chopped down soon :)

Don't get me started on the 1TB thing, I had OneDrive Unlimited not so long ago, which this year has dropped to 1TB, just wish MS will make there mind up and stick to it rather than keep changing the rules every 5 mins. >:(

The 1TB OneDrive Storage bundled with Office / 365 does actually represent good value especially on the Home / 5 User Licence as you say. But, and a big but, is it becomes almost unusable to use a full 1TB once you start chucking 100's of GB's backwards and forth, mainly due to the very simplistic way MS designed the OneDrive Sync Software for the PC.

If you use the PC Sync on its own you've almost got to have as much free Hard Drive space (and a good fast Internet) as you have Cloud Storage, or be really up to speed and remember what folders are sync'ing, or use the Web Access and don't sync, but once you've added a few Mobiles and want to share or bounce data around between them the PC Sync App gets really messy.

You can chose which directories and sub directories to sync, but there's no options to upload or download sync only, its all or nothing, plus you can only sync it in all in a single Folder, 1 hard drive or partition at anyone time, meaning your forever copying or moving files back and forth, otherwise you have to unlink it, sign out and re assign a new folder, then hope when you sign back in, that the sync app doesn't start uploading / deleting files.  :(

The thing that pee'd me off, was OneDrive's unwillingness to let you store OS Back Up or Drive Images without a lot of fuffing around, theres 3rd party apps that will help with that but there stuck with OneDrives Delveloper API which have file size restrictions etc to name a few.

If your used to using the 1TB OneDrive then fine, but as a new user, I would almost certainly recommend that you install the Sync Folder on another Partition of the Hard Drive that's got plenty of free space rather than use the default C: OS Drive, sounds crazy, but once you get past 300gb+ of usage / storage it kinda makes sense.  ;)

What Mobile OS did you use?

You may have to select automatic camera upload option.

Sign out of OneDrive then back in again and check Account/Storage etc.

Or you can log in on the web to your MS Account 'Live.com' and check your Services and Subscriptions to see what you have and expiry dates.

Good heads up but going to be a problem with any 'free' offering - they want to use it for marketing and the offering will likely change periodically. If you need consistency, support etc no real substitute for paying  :-\

It sure does need a bit of tweaking as you start using it in anger, good point about adding phones and pc's.

I need to remember to delete old pc's I had used with the account which have now gone WEEE   :)

Sorry, meant to post this a week or so ago, so thanks Zirk :y

As to the limits, I think it shows just how expensive it is to provide "free" services, and MS were clearly making a loss on it.

It will likely be provided on enterprise grade storage, so expect to play close to $1m for each array holding a few hundred Tb, and about 10% annually in maintenance contracts. Then all the servers that are required to create a "cloud" - most of these storage cloud providers have several datacentres around the globe to get data near to the consumer, the cost of the firewalls and networking hardware and maintenance costs, then the transit costs to their Internet provider (or direct peering, which I suspect MS would do). Then the capex on building datacenters, powering them, cooling them (generally about the same as powering them), all the admin/staff/offices to support them....

Unfortunately, the freetards of this world fail to see that the internet is incredibly expensive.
