Any suggestions as what to use to flush heater matrix...already used dishwasher tabs..that cleared it...heater ok...then heater stopped working..flushed with soda crystals..cleared it again.....heater was good.....heater stopped again ..only warm air coming through,,flushed it again today with rad cleaner and back flushed it several times....bits of scale came out once more..water then ran clean,,and heater working once more..toasty...so just wondering what is the best stuff to use in case it clogs up again,,thanks.. :y

Have you reverse flushed it? Could be that by not flushing for a long enough period of time all you are doing is moveing sediment back and forth in the system :-\
-
yep..on all occasions flushed and reverse flush for ages until clear water and no scale came out,,,then heater was great,,but then goes to luke warm after a week or two...just wondered if it does the same thing once more what would be the best stuff to use,,and would it do more harm than good to flush out the whole cooling system,,,,as a bit afraid of a complete cooling system flush may just clog the heater matrix and make things worse.....thanks....

Could it be that the main radiator is partially silted up already, so when you flush the heater matrix, you clear that, only for it to get clogged again from the main radiator after a while?
Flush the main radiator several times, then the heater matrix again, and let us know?

Could be Ron.....worth a look see at that possibility...get some good rad flush and put that through then as you say re-flush heater matrix...cheers matey...will let you know results when i do it sometime next week... :y :y

Heard people using vinegar (distilled white). Sounds crazy, but it's actually a very good, gentle cleaner. And it's not going to hurt rubber or metal. Bleach dissolves alloy, which on a modern engine is bad news, and lots of stuff attacks rubber and plastics. Dishwasher tablets is the recommended on here.
Only element is I'd be tempted to try the vinegar in warmer weather as I'm a bit paranoid about the antifreeze concentration, might be overthinking it, though. :)

Industrial Oven Cleaner works well, especially if your friendly with your local Pub / Restaurant.
Make sure the stuff doesn't eat plastic / rubber through, most modern ones should be good.

Are you using correct strength antifreeze, and decent quality stuff? I'm concerned if this keeps reoccurring.

Evening all,
I am going to flush the heater matrix on my Royale-I've also been told about using dishwasher tablets-do you put it in the radiator and run the car and then drain and flush or what?
Thanks
Steve

I believe Jaime puts all his stuff in the dishwasher. ;D

First time I flushed it out I dissolved dishwasher tablet in boiling water, then poured that into heater matrix with two lengths of hose tied up high to be able to leave it in there for an hour, that worked for a while then clogged up again.....The scale type stuff that came out is realy hard small pieces so i put a piece in white vinegar for 24 hours but it did not even soften it up at all,so that was no good to flush with......I have good life time antifreeze in the system,,and at the correct strength however I still renew it yearly to be safe..after flushing again yesterday the heater works great once more,,,,for how long,we will wait and see....I am looking to find a realy good engine cooling flush to flush the whole system out and then if that dose not work I will change the main radiator...thanks..

Halfords used to do a 2-part heavy duty cleaner, part 1 being quite aggressive and part 2 neutralised the acid, etc.
I Googled for you but couldn't see it listed, but I have some in my garage if you can't find any and want to try it

Dishwasher tabs are for cleaning post oil cooler failure...
Dishwasher cleaner/descaler liquid is probably a better bet, or fernox as used for cleaning domestic heater systems ;)

Halfords no longer sell that 2-part cleaner under their own name, but I suspected that it might have been a Holts original, re-branded.....
