Wife and son tell me that the latest update has knackered their laptops. Anyone else?
-
I've run it since it came out and had no problems, but others on here seem to have :-\ :-\ :-\

No problems with Windows 10, just the latest (ie. today) update.

Although win 10 is a good os, the fact that you have to jump through hoops to enable system restore, and you can't boot into safe mode is a pain.
-
I went on the lads laptop and uninstalled the update, it seems better but slow. Wifey's work laptop is not even showing the update and now won't connect to the router even though it says it has. Sigh.
-
mmm mine has not updated anything since 18/12/15 - Cumulative update and v1511 - and insists it is fully up-to-date at the moment .. :)

yes you can ... 4 different ways .. :)

I accept you can't force it to do so on boot .. but there is a simple reason ..
"If you have modern PC with a UEFI BIOS and a fast SSD drive, there's no way you can interrupt the boot procedure with your keypresses. On older PCs, with a classic BIOS and no SSD drive, pressing these keys might still work though."

Tis a worry, Nige, but fortunately not my worry. There are no banking apps or anything else much to worry about on their computers, I look after that side of things.

Yeah, you can fiddle with it, but it's not 'just there' like win 7.
I looked here:

TBH, I get so frustrated with the other two, who are committed 'button pressers' before the computer has finished what it's doing, that I tend to let them get on with it.
When I ask what they did before anything happened, the answer is always "Nothing".

They all say that ;D ;D

Steve - I would imagine that during install they thought it had stalled but you have to keep your eye on "task view" in bottom left side of screen, click on that to get back to what is in progress so you avoid restarting mid stream. I just bought a new laptop on Saturday and I thought at first I was going to have problems but fortunately not, installed office 2016 from my 365 account no problem.
-
I cant say it, because it's just not fair.
Oh, OK, yes I can.
Anybody who is struggling to install Windows 10, is a complete fucktard. Anyone who installs Windows 10 and suffers a slow-down is a complete fucktard.
THE END

Back on Win 7 ...Couldn't get Win 10 to run properly on my laptop, If i could justify it i'd buy a MacBook Pro in a heart beat.... But the way I would spec one out it would cost just over £2,500 :o :o....

That's interesting. A basic MacBook Pro would beat the shit out of a £2k 'IBM Compatible' laptop.
Trust me, you don't need 16GB RAM or the latest processor. They just fly.......

Sorry for the Double Post.
If you have any Anti Virus software running, get rid of it. That will hinder Win10. Windows Defender is more than enough protection.

Was the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, 2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz..... Not the 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz ..although it's only £150 more when your already over £2,000 so it's probably worth while adding that which should make it a little more future proof?
It came to that price with a few extras such as £400 1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage, £229 Final Cut Pro X, £279 AppleCare.

I used to use Avast, Now I just use the windows security essentials. Pretty sure I had Avast when last trying to install Win 10.

SE is really good (I'd advise anyone running Win 7 or 8 to install it). Uninstall any third party AV software, and give it another go. Win 10 is really rather good.

Whereas I wish they'd bump the top spec to 32Gb as it would be really nice to be able to have more than three 4Gb VMs running at once (and some of our images need 8Gb).. but for general purposes I agree.
The base spec 15" would do me just fine at £1600 excl. AppleCare. The corporate machine I have is two years old and has an easy couple more years life left in it.. the Mac Mini I have at home is six years old and for general work is only just starting to get a little annoying.

No issues here with Win10, or the latest updates.
Admittedly, my 2007 daily use laptop did need a tweak to make the WiFi card compatible.
I would say as long as you don't have incompatible hardware, Win10 runs as faster as Win7 on any Intel based machine. If you bought AMD, well, serves you right really.
I would suggest, once upgraded to Win10 (and thus having the free licence), to rebuild from scratch - this will force out all the left-over shite and OEM shite from your Win7/Win8 original builds, which are the mostly likely culprits for any incompatibilities.
As BM says, Windows Defender on Win10 is more that adequate for AV. Possibly worth running a Malware Bytes Free scan weekly to remove non viral malware.
As to OSX v Windows 10 performance, there's not a huge amount in them on the same machine. In many cases, Windows may just have the edge, due to more optimised drivers. Obviously, AV software hurts both platforms, especially when accessing disks, though as BM states, MS SE/WinDef is pretty lightweight when it comes to resources.

whats wrong with AMD please :y
-
Major improvement I have found with Win 10 / Defender is websites .. all the AV's that now "check" web sites seem to slow down access incredibly, especially those with bigger files like photobucket etc. Defender seems to be much quicker. The "best" combination for speed is Edge/Defender .. but Edge is just NOT user friendly IMHO.. so mostly Chrome or FF here with Defender both seem to work OK
For hard drive/download protection there seems to be little difference in access time with Defender or Avast which I used to use

Slow (in real world conditions), inefficient and unreliable.
