Title: Headlight Bulbs
Post by: tunnie on 08 January 2016, 15:09:12
For the 2.2, any flavours of the month? One went pop few weeks back, I popped a random spare in that I had in the garage. Now the other one went pop  ::)

Was thinking Osram Night Breaker Unlimited....

It's between the nighbreakers, and the new boys in town, the Philips Xtreme vision, which have been uprated over the last couple of years to 130% or therabouts. Looking at reviews, seems like these are outperforming the Nightbreakers now. Don't own either, but I'm upgrading some point soon and tempted by the Philips...

Do you fellas not have xenons installed...?

BUT

I have Nightbreakers installed in my other motor and they are brilliant and well worth it TBH... dunno about the Philips Xtremes though...

Xenons in the 3.2, normal projectors in the 2.2.  :)

IIRC you had Nightbreakers in Mr T?

These higher output bulbs are known to give more illumination at the cost of shorter life.

I personally have the Phillips Vision version of the Osram Nightbreakers, both much the same.  Hellfrauds do their version that might be almost competitive on trade maybe? I think I paid £15 for the pair of Visions.

I have Nightbreakers fitted to my Vectra.......I mean Signum. ::)

Illumination has gone from shit to slightly less shit. :-\

I would look into HIDS......apparently the 55w HIDS are superior to the 35w HIDS. At least according to the Vectra C boys.

Is this because the  2.2 is not a proper Omega?..... :)

Some of us on ABS are starting to look at LED upgrades. Cost is supposadly £35 a kit. Couple are trialing them at the moment. Maybe doing my latest Zaf with them. If I do, will report back my findings

Are the xenons standard on the Facelifts or MiniFacelifts or is it just the Elites....?

Sorry to sound a bit thick, but only ever come across xenons in any Omega I found in a scrappy...?

....and possibly CDX.

Aye Nightbreakers. They have lasted about 4 years. So can't complain  :y

Pre facelift Elites only, post facelift CDX, Elite and Plod... Might have been  a cost option on MV6 but at work, so don't have the brochure to hand... ::)

Definatively, for UK cars:

PFL - not available
MFL - MV6 and Elite
FL - MV6 (but not Sport*), CDX and Elite

I don't believe it was an option on any car where it wasn't standard.

* As confirmed by Taxi Al. Sport is the 2.2 version of the MV6.

Can genuine xenon headlights be fitted to a FL CD ?

Yes, provided you fit the headlight washers and ideally the automatic light levelling... This includes an ecu, two sensors and about a mile of wiring ;)

I think the Sport only got washers because all the Prodrive bumpers came with the holes in place from production.

LED upgrades are tricky, believe the first kits had glare issues.  Interested to know if theyve improved...

Lad at work has fitted "Philips WhiteVision - intense xenon effect" to his astra.

He said they were  better then the night breakers, one of which had failed after 18 months use.

Thanks, I'm tempted to trying others having used Night Breakers before  :y

I have looked into LEDs, given my plan is to fit LEDs elsewhere anyway; read up on a few forums and websites and it all seems pretty straightforward, even for me, though me being me I'd definitely make up an adapter piece between the existing loom and the converted headlamp unit, meaning refitting standard lamp units will be plug and play.

Very interested in hearing about the LED install, Keith and how people are getting on with them  :)

Maybe the 'ultimate' system would be the self-levelling system of the HIDs, plus LEDs, so to hopefully avoid glare issues, etc ?

I think you'll find them (and similar from other brands) hard to beat.  The chavvy ones that give a whiter/bluer light are poorer at illumination.

LEDs are an interesting proposition, but suspect they need a) further development, b) will fall foul of the same rules that HIDs do.

1998 or 1999 halogen headlights. With decent bulbs. Much better.
