Do you have Xenon lights?  If so, then the washers must work for its MOT.

I know the general perception is that mechanics aren't very cerebral, however it is their job.  ???  Keith'll see you right  :)

Is the pump not working or is it just blocked....?

If you can hear the pump, Id suggest its just blocked....

Don't headlamp-washer-equipped models have two pumps? One for screen and one for the lamps? As per...

Just in case you hear a buzzing, but it's the other pump you're hearing... Pull the plug off one to confirm the headlamp pump is still working/dead?

It's a daft question I know but you are checking them with the lights turned on aren't you?

Well I was sure but now i'll double check, assuming it works at the same time as screen wash? But i'm pretty sure its kaput and unplugged too.Now how would you ever know if it needed water?

Yes works at same time as screen washer[as long as headlamps are on]feeds off same bottle as screen wash,so if screen is getting washed so are headlights.I seem to remember being told that washer bottle is bigger capacity on cars with headlamp wash than on models without.Don't know how true that is though.

6.3 litres vs 5 ;)

Gives a short 1 second blast when you pull the front washer switch... But only when the headlights are on :y
