Title: sparrows
Post by: raywilb on 27 January 2016, 10:50:30
I have filled a couple of bird feeders with seed & fat balls. have attracted sparrows, blue tits & a robin. two days ago a sparrow hawk was perched near to where the seed is. it hung around for two days, & when I approached it never seemed unduly bothered.  let me get within 2 yards. outcome is no sparrows or other species to be seen.

Clever thing nature. Britain isn't overun with sparrow hawks. True they come and cull the small bird population but they don't take them all. They will be back and the hawk moves on elsewhere.

Not be the first time I've had pigeon pie either.Possibly it's because I come from Swinton about 10 miles from Barnsley :D

Fantastic meal  so long as it doesn't have lead shot in it. far tastier than chicken.

I did get a odd fox & loads of hedgehogs in my garden. not anymore since buying a jack Russell. I stop him if I can but even when a h/hog goes into a tight ball he,ll still shake them.

If they're still noisy in the pie your recipe needs improving!

Ive learned a lesson from feeding birds in the garden. Make sure the food is always as high up as possible, if you must feed them. Otherwise you may well get rats on your property, and once you've got them they are sods to get rid off.
I had them living under my shed for a year and finally got rid of them about a year ago. It cost a lot of time. effort and money to do so.
I caught and drowned quite a few (including one that had a body a foot long) but they were breeding faster than I could catch them.
In the end I had to dig a trench - 16 inches deep and wide - around the shed. Attach strong wire mesh to the shed and then run it into and across the trench before filling it all in again.
Apparently they hate metal on their teeth, so that seems to have stopped the little bastids.

Your,e making it too easy for them Baza. Make sure the feeders are hanging from thin branches so the pigeons can,t get a good foothold. Have a great laugh in my garden watching them trying for seed that is just out of reach ;D. They usually just bugger off or wait for the smaller birds to drop something. ;)
