.....and another thing!
Following the CH gasket change and associated work the car has continued to run well and the heater is great (faster to warm up if anything than my Diesel Jag)
When I did the work I soldered the spade terminal onto the sender unit at the rear of the cylinder head. My thinking was that this would be simple way of ensuring an otherwise dodgy electrical connection. I then used a simple choc-block connector to make the connection to the original cable in the loom.
Initially worked fine and registered on the gauge as you would expect as the car warmed up and settled to its operating Temp. But soon..... nothing! The needle doesn't move off the lower stop.
I've checked the connections - all OK - and now suspect the sender unit which I would imagine is relatively easy to change?? I notice that the brass stud (to which I soldered the tab) can be rotated. Is that correct??
Anybody any other suggestions??

I'd say not.
'Earth' the blue wire that should go to the temp sensor & the gauge show go to HOT :y

Great - I'll try
Just as soon as it stops blowing a gale!!

I'm confused now.....
I earthed out the temperature sender - no visible effect whatever.
Just to be clear - there are two "senders" one I understand is warning light and one sends to the temp gauge in the dashboard??
One has the little brass disc onto which a "Faston" tag from the wiring loom fits, the other has a small plastic plug.....
Which is which??

Pic of a 2.0 set up. 2.2 same but no dispack

Ah Thanks - but I'd found this pic.
I'm still unclear from the pic which is which though............
My concern is that the gauge on the dashboard doesn't work at all.
In infer that this is the small brass item - so what does the item with the plastic plug do??
I just don't want to replace the wrong unit??
-
Tells the Engine management unit the Coolant temp so it can work out fuelling / air ratio etc.
-
Ah Great Thanks!
So - if i replace the little brass widget ( £3.07) there's a half decent chance I'll have a temperature gauge?
Still strange that nothing happens when "earthed" though?

ignition on ...... ::)

Yup

Yup
could be the gauge that's goosed then :-\
-
You did earth the wire and not the sensor... :-\
-
I think for £3 or whatever I'll just buy one and see what happens........
I'll report back.
Thanks again to all!
-
So - duly ordered a sensor and - eventually - got around to replacing it yesterday .......... No change. :(
Is it likely that the gauge itself would just pack up?? Is there any wiring/plugs in the circuit that are worth a check??
-
I have the 2.6 V6 same problem, mine packed up after a thermostat change, worked for a while then stopped. It does occasionally come off the bump stop but only when accelerating hard. I live with it as the cooling fans all work fine and the car runs great. I thought it may have been an airlock but then that would effect the ECU sensor beside it as well I would guess.
Garage did as you did, changed the brass sensor but no different, think they earthed it out and it was ok.

My car had the same problem when I bought it the temp gauge did not work, upon closer inspection figured that the wire has come off the sending unit. It's only one wire on 2.0 and it has to be snug. You should check again.

Thanks for the advice - always nice to know you're not alone!!
Like yours the car otherwise runs/works fine - so I'm inclined to leave well alone!
-
Yeah, I see your point but it just looks nice when all the gauges work :y
Thankfully omega gauges are awesome! sometimes I wish I owned Catera instrument clusters
-
Well - here's a funny thing........
For no apparent reason that I can think of - with the possible exception of some slightly warmer weather - the gauge now works!!
Seems stable at about 80 deg indicated most of the time, moves off the stop after about two miles and goes up in traffic - all the things you'd expect really!
Proof if proof were needed - the gremlins are still around!!
;D
