Title: Some Maths Help Please
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 17 July 2008, 22:52:38

If my computer averages 640 Kb sec I have just work out I will download 27 GB in 12 Hours.  Could some one do the sums and tell me if I am right or wrong.

TIA.   :y

(640 kbps) x 12 hours = 3.29589844 gigabytes
(640 kBps) x 12 hours = 26.3671875 gigabytes

Careful how you type your B's as you know one is bits and one is Bytes

27 Gb = 27 x 1,073,741,824 bytes   ( 1 Gb = 2^30 )

= 28991029248 bytes

640 Kb =640 x 1024   ( 1 Kb = 2^10)

= 655360 bytes

28991029248 / 655360 = 44236.8 seconds

= 737.28 minutes

= 12.288 hours

always assuming the download rate remains constant... and no packets require resending..... of course ..  :)

I have monitored the speeds on a chart and they dont frop below 640 KB, I can speed it up to over 800 Kb dropping to 720 Kb.  So I did the sums based on the minimum speeds.

I am on a fair usage allowance from 4pm to midnight do I have stopped yesting for now.

But am going to start a 12 hour trial at might night  and see what I achieve.

I just wanted to make a quick reply to say how much I hate this board.

There I am innocently winding down to get to bed.  I come over to my pc to make sure things I want off on the pc are off.., look over my shoulder to peek at what my other half is doing and I see reams of numbers and calculations GB and Kilobits and bytes.  Oh god, not just before I go to bed please.  Have u guys no sense of decorum?

Before u ask, I use blueyonder, and get enuf download bandwidth to do what I want.., (20Gb or 50 on one occasion lol, PC nearly died on me then).  Thats all I need to know folks.., its enuf lol :P

I still think everybody is getting thier bit, bytes, meg and gig mixed up!

Remember that download speed is measured in bytes as its a serial stream, files are measure in bytes as they are stored as hax values.

I suspect Skruntie is getting 724 Kbits per second download which in file terms is 90 Kbytes per second.

Two reasons why I suspect this.

1) If you were working in the Kbytes area then you would getting a sustained download speed close to 6.4Mbits....and given the loading on the internet servers and routers etc, I cant see that being achieved. Remember that 8M broadband is the pipe speed, not the through put speed!

2) Plus net are good, but not that good!
