Title: What was that ?
Post by: EMD on 04 February 2016, 11:59:35
Went out this morning to the hospital , parked up and while i was sitting in the car heard a loud bang coming from the rear  :o Engine was off , sounded like someone had thrown a piece of metal at the car  :-\ first thought was coil spring broke but car sits as it should with even gap on each wheel arch  :( ???

I'd say that your first thought is probably correct.   :y
It will be a wee bit of the spring, but maybe not enough to change the ride height.
I'd get under it and have a feel at the ends of the springs where they sit in the mounts.
You may even find the broken bit still sitting there!   :o

Yes it seems plausible , i did drive the car back and all seemed fine with the handling although i do drive on the slowish side nowadays . If it is the spring i guess i'll be looking to replace both sides at once ? Mite as well change the shocks too as i remember them looking a bit tired .

I've heard of omegas crumbling to dust in front of you, and engines disintegrating as they throw the belt. But going bang whilst parked up is a new one on me.  ;D

Yet only an omega mentioned on here....... :-\
French cars are good and bad. Yank cars are good and bad. German cars are good and bad. Omegas are just bad.   ;D

And Mk6 Fiestas(probably the biggest culprit), Mondeos and 5 series BMWs. Breaking whilst the car is parked is the normal failure type, followed by a nasty scraping and burning rubber smell if the driver is too inept stupid to notice.

What a blinkered lot you are. An omega self-destructs and you turn it on the French. In the last five years of owning French, we have spent exactly nowt on repairs.  :P

Many people these days it seems tend to change only whichever spring is broken.Reasons of economy I suppose. When my Elite failed mot [year before last?]on abroken rear spring I had both replaced but then it's always been my belief that when it comes to suspension/brake components etc then it's always best/safest to replace both sides at same time.

Yes
With a torch and a mirror you might not even need to jack it up.

Rather than wear it, you could hammer the broken end into a nice piece of wood and turn it into the official OOF Daftest Breakdown trophy
