How many cars do you buy ;D
Old Mercs always had a reputation of being bullet proof, that era that, I prefer old, S Class...

Only if given a lifetime of sympathetic, open wallet maintenance. They do not take abuse or neglect at all well, and when they eventually start to rust will beat an old Jag in the race to the compactor.

Engines / mechanicals are capable of going to the moon and back, providing they have had regular basic servicing - oil and filter changes really. There isn't much else to do to them.
As said, look for rust, it can be everywhere and anywhere, but particular spots are at bottom of rear window ( might be only visible from inside the boot), jacking points at corners of the underfloor, inner wings behind headlights, plus the more visible places.
Lovely old cars with plenty of character and a fine handling chassis.
I have one (a 2.5D) and love the old thing.
That example seems a bit pricey for a basic 1.8 spec car, but then its from a dealer, so expected I suppose.
Theres a good online forum - Mercedes 190.co.uk, which can give as much info about them as OOF does about Omegas. :y

Old school Mercedes had thorough, intensive servicing schedules... ie gearbox oil/filter every 40K... This is why people have the misconception that they are expensive to look after...
Service items are reasonably priced, readily available and religous servicing is cheaper in the long run than penny-pinching neglect...
Unfortunately they do rot readily :'( the W140 is better in this regard, but still not immune...

Mine gets a change of oil and filters every 5k, same as the Omega. Its covered 222,000 miles and feels like it will easily do that again.
Just common sense really, like any old car. Some people will buy them and think "bullet proof" means never having to lift the bonnet from one year to the next, and then get a shock when something goes wrong.
Main problem with mine was that I had to change all 4 calipers when I only wanted to renew the brake fluid. All four bleed nipples wrung off at the first application of pressure from a spanner. ::) ;D
Mine had obviously been neglected by the previous owner, but it didn't take a lot to get it in fine mechanical fettle again.
They are so simple compared to anything more modern, so its easier to do than, say an Omega for example.
Its pearl grey, but has a few areas of primer and a couple of repainted panels which arent a perfect match, so its nickname is , 50 shades of grey. :D

Had a 1993 190e 1.8 a few years back as already said rust can be a problem in certain areas , most also seem to suffer from diff whine , they will go on forever with this problem , I had mine rebuilt by a specialist for around £300. That is a reasonable price as the values of the 190 are on the way up, take a look at www.mtsv.co.uk where I bought my E430 from he loves them & look at his prices if this is a good one buy it..they are a wonderful piece of engineering.

Car does look in great condition , parts are very reasonable & maintainance is simple compared to more modern vehicles, I was very tempted to buy a 2.6 190e from MTSV but the E430 was just too good to ignore.

Yes easily, not many get as far as the for sale stage, people seem to snap them up as fast as he gets them.

The stable diet of pretty much every taxi firm in sausage land during the 1980's :y
Bomb proof if the basics are looked after iirc
-
Bloody hell. Seems MrsGK and I have started a trend, by having two in our stable.
Cracking cars and very easy to work on. And very well built.

Ahh the 190E, the last great Mercedes. It all went wrong after that... That does look a beautiful example :)

I prefer the W124 E class myself,values of them are going north too,wish I kept mine :'(
-
Was-and still aren't-a fan of 190E styling and of those I've been in the interiors always struck me as too plasticky, especially for an allegedly premium brand.

They are very plastic inside but it feels OK with some dressing.
Later ones had more wood on the dash to break it up a bit...
I quite fancy putting a nice vinyl wrap on the dash of one of ours, but fear MrsGK would end up applying the same wrap to my sensitive areas. She wants two standard cars, I don't see the point... :D
