Title: Oh Poo
Post by: Sipey on 16 July 2008, 21:04:04
Evening all,

Please could you tell me how to remove a security wheel nut that has had the teeth burred so the key no longer fits. I have been trying in vain for the past 2 hours.

I have soaked it in penetrating fluid, hit it, rocked it, heated and drilled it (now I have no drill bits left). Is there a tool for removing them?????

Cheers folks,

Mark

Drill the alu cover in the side, then leaver the cap away with a chisel... i did this today! No good if you need to reuse though! I also tried 3 drill bits, but was a hex bolt in effing steel!!! :y

If they're the Vauxhall ones with the ring around the outside, they are a pain to get off. I paid about £30 in drill bits and then had to use a chisel and mallet to finish the job off :(

These DO NOT work on the VXL nuts as the large outer ring just spins.

You can buy the professional set the AA use but its £150 odd plus the VAT, best to pop down a tyre place as they normally have the kit and charge about £30 to remove the set, BUT they cannot be re-used after

The local ATS used something more like these :- clicky (http://www.trueshopping.co.uk/product.php?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=cost-per-click&pid=24107&cid=13&affid=25&utm_campaign=Sealey_Locking_Wheel_Nut_Removal_Set_2pc) that have a finer helix. The locking nuts they took off were Vauxhall's 3 prong type, but they took spinning collar in their stride!   :y How good they would be with e later 'cake cutter' type I'm noot sure, as the spinning collar is more substantial.
And they didn't charge me either!  ;)

They do not work on the 'flower/ cake cutter' type, as you said the outer collar is more substantial which means it does not grip.

The set i was talking about was this:-

 Professional locking nut remover  (http://www.lockingwheelnutremover.co.uk/indexEnglish.html)

Not cheap but works every time

Ah! I see!
They're obviously secretive about exactly how it works.

Got the bloody thing off  :)

Took it to Kwik fit and got them to remove it  :y

Got it MOT'd today as well. Failed on indicator bulbs being incorrect colour and excessive play in wheel due to knackered track rod end - they changed them for me and all is good. :y
