Title: car suggestions
Post by: Gaffers on 08 February 2016, 18:13:47
As some of you may have noticed, I might be looking for a new old car depending on findings to be done on the miggy following the bust up.

I have been looking for options with the following requirements :

- estate with big boot and good access.
- fair economy with a bit of poke (long motorway driving )
- comfy seats and a few gadgets
- not French
- budget of around 5-6k

I have been looking at a 2006 530i msport but wondered if anyone had any suggestions.   :y

Actually I was offered a late 90s 7 series, v8, gassed just before xmas, but never listened to the details, as I don't want a beemer. I could find out if still available, but suspect you'll suffer all the usual bmw v8 issues from that era...

Yeah tht sounds like it could have issues.  I need something reliable due to the miles i am doing and that i want to be spearfishing at weekends (hence the need for a big boot for the rib) and not fixing it :y

http://www.rakecarsales.co.uk/used-cars/saab-9-5-2-3-hot-aero-5dr-rake-201511289063171  (Stupidly quick, can be remapped to 290BHP without any hardware Mods for £70.  But the VED is £490 (earlier Aero HOT is £290 P/A))

http://www.shalfordmotorco.co.uk/used-cars/saab-9-5-1-9-tid-turbo-edition-5dr-reading-201601180181024  (Same engine as Vauxhall use, only 150BHP, but can easily be remappd to almost 200BHP without any hardware modifications).

Boot isn't enormous, but you have the factory roof-rails if required.  Plenty of toys in both.

V70 not bad looking for an estate, always look very low to me though.

V70 T5 would work if it had a bigger boot.  The 3.3m rib is quite big even when rolled up.  Plus engine and the rest of the spearfishing gear and safety equipment the need for space soon racks up.  Plus if it's big enough then I can always kip in the boot over night which is safer than driving back when exhausted after a day in the water.

I drove a c70 t5 auto once and it was pretty nippy.  Handled well too, but forget using the rear seats.

Ours went pretty regularly, usually after a very spirited run, used to get the warning lamp saying gearbox fault. Most of the time cooked gearbox oil.  ::) ::) ::)

If a V70 isn't big enough, then a Galant certainly won't be! And the running costs of a Mitsubishi are comical as long as someone else is paying.

Mate of mine had one of those.

I don't think he ever did find a way of changing the plugs on the back bank. ::)

Looks bonkers.

Crying out to be bought, painted like something from a Gerry Anderson Supermarionation series (maybe the Spectrum Patrol Vehicle) and taken on a banger rally..

Does it have to be a car?

For that sort of cash you can get a modern Transit sized van with all sorts of gadgets, extra seats and engines.

Or the slightly smaller Kangoo/ Connect/ Berlingo small to mid sized vans

Plenty of room in the back and more comfortable to kip in than an estate

If its a car then the £5k gets you a 2009-2010 160bhp diesel Inshitnia estate, if you like that sort of thing

Lot less than that gets you a V6 turbo Vectra estate and they are easily as big as an Omega

E class Mercedes estate?
