Just interested really... The end of my road has a Stop sign but Give Way lines on the road... Which takes priority? :-\
(For full disclosure, it's a private road joining another private road so slightly irrelevant... Just always wondered!)

Common sense would suggest that the Stop sign over rules the give way :-\

I had something similar regarding signage pop up a few weeks ago. Council had received complaints about a matter and they complained to the police to get it resolved. It landed on my toes because I've done a signs & line writing course ::) ::) ::)
I simply looked at the problem and told the council that we could only legally enforce your signage IF you change it so the instructions are correct and not conflicting with others signs literally 20mtrs down the road ;D ;D ;D ;D (something which I really enjoyed doing).

That would be my thought. But.... The stop sign is left over from when the USAF occupied and there are clear views both ways on approach ::)
As I said, it's private roads anyway but was just interested :y

The Road Traffic Act applies to private roads where the public has access. Lots of ifs and buts, but generally if there is more than one household served by the road, then RTA applies. The same goes for supermarket car parks.
Section 36 of the RTA deals with signage. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/36
It would be up to a court to decide whether the public had access to your 'private road', and whether the signage is correct, and ultimately whether to convict you of contravening signage.
To avoid the potential ramifications, it's probably best to stop at a stop sign.

^^ This.
