Well last night I got in the BMW X5 in the yard at the nic after doin all the pre-checks, got 3.2 miles down the road and with only what I can only describe as a very very very very loud BANG!!!!!!!! :o :o :o I stopped the X5 (well it rolled to a halt) ::) ::) ::) dash lit up like a Christmas tree & for a moment I thought I was on fire with all the smoke. One quick change of under-crackers later, on a pitch black country road I got the torch out looked under the car where the smoke was coming from to see the remains of the front prop-shaft, the innards of the gearbox and about 8 litres of ATF spilling all over the road. :'( :'( :'(
RIP X5 2012 140k
-
Bro has had gearbox issues with his (older) X5. £7k for a new one.

You can spend the £5k saving on bicuits :y

Dunno what happened to it due to absolutely no lighting, but from what I could see the front prop had sheared right off, the sump of the g/box had a hole about the size of a fist so something had let go bigtime :o :o :o
Stood there at the side of the road for over an hour freezin me nads off awaiting duty garage, only when they arrived and tried to put it on the back it wouldn't move :o :o and the recovery waggon ended up being pulled towards it :o :o :o

Only one more until you`re a serial killer then ;D

When I eventually got back to the nic, I had to take our 13 plate 5 series saloon to HQ due to it having a faulty turbo ::) ::) ::) that one was nowt to do with me :P :P :P

Don't worry you'll soon have Vauxhall's to play with! :y
-
I think you'll find there's a recall for that exact fault on X5's....
Something about a driveshaft joint wearing prematurely and then failing catastrophically.
-
:o :o :o :o
Glad I ain't paying for the repairs!!!
-
Have your BMWs won any reliability awards? ::) ::) ::)
-
The only reliable thing about em is their ability to breakdown! ;D ;D ;D

Glad I ain't paying for the repairs!!!
I assume you pay council tax, etc. You are indirectly.

Nope, never have an advanced Vauxhall......as there aren't any :-\ :-\ :-\ The Omega was the last one as far as I can see, the Vectra never really cut it & wasn't big enough - same with the Insignia.
Now with forces moving all their fleets to devil juice the only real contenders are Audi A4/5, BMW 330/530 or Jag XF as their diesel engines have enough clout to keep up with petrol derivatives.
Hopefully (said in loose terms) BMW will pay for the repairs as it is a manufacture fault, but I won't hold my breath.
I long for the day when the higher-ups smell the coffee and switch back to Petrol fuelled cars :'( :'( :'(

Ahem, what about the Biturbo 195bhp CDTi lump ::)
On a side note, my proper Vauxhall trafficmobile is off to pastures new next week, so probably a good thing that the X5 is being fixed...

I don't think it's enough to keep up with some modern cars.

I don't think it's enough to keep up with some modern cars.
Possibly not, but it won't cost twentyfive squillion pounds to repair when it breaks down ;D

Nah, we'd probably just replace the car :D ;D :D ;D
The insignia 2.0L lump Bi-turbo 0-60 about 8.9 secs v BMW 530 Bi-turbo 5.3 secs :-\ :-\ :-\ Unfortunately wouldn't come close for some of the stuff we do :( :( :(

And there lies the crux of the matter. Regardless of what people think of a certain brand of car, the straight six diesel's are bloody quick. If you're in a job where you've got to pursue another vehicle, or get somewhere quickly, you need to be in something pretty nifty. Our current vehicle (run of the mill production car) does 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and knocks on the door of 160mph (limited to 155'ish). It returns damn good economy as well, achieving mid 40's to the gallon, so the Police need something close to these figures.
Narrows the choice down somewhat doesn't it. :-\ As Jason knows, the *35d brings a smile to your face when you launch it, and the damn thing just keeps pulling until it hits the limiter. :y
Driven like this daily though, something has to give now and then. ;D

On the newer ones the reliability ain't too bad, its usually about 150-160k in when sommat goes pop!
Getting delivery of 330 X-Drive tourers in a few months......see how long they last. :y

Remind me YZ250, what happened in Horspath a couple of years back? ;D

Put it another way, the Omega estate will always be preferable to a Meriva ;D
