Title: Focus tdci starter
Post by: al brown on 25 February 2016, 17:19:43
Hi guys,

Wife's 1.8 tdci has a starting fault developing. Sometimes the car starts fine but other times the engine will spin over a couple of times then the starter keeps spinning but stops spinning the engine. You can hear the starter spinning, a simple off on with the key will normally get the engine spinning again but not always. Battery has plenty of v in it, although I haven't tested it with a load yet, but that said, even after a couple of goes, when the starter does turn the engine is turns fine and starts the car.
Car had a recon starter last year, but it was an eBay buy.
My feeling is is the starter or starter solenoid rather than the battery, was hoping someone has an actual answer, as I'm not very electrical minded.
Cheers, Al

Faulty starter motor.
If it has already had one recently, then you have a knackered dual-mass flywheel(DMF) that has filled it with swarf. Realistically you have two options: bung on the cheapest starter motor you can find and sell the bloody thing or do it properly, which will require a new DMF, clutch and starter motor.

This is one of several reasons why smart TDCi Mondeos are so cheap, as that little lot is a four-figure job.

Cheers for the good news! I am able to do all the work, just was the diagnosis side of the electrics that I wasn't sure of. If it is just a case of the starter filling with swarf I will take it apart and clean it and see if that makes a difference for now till I can work out when i have time to pull the gearboxi, or else add another cheap ford listing.

We Buy Any Car won't pay enough to make it worth spending £0.37 on an air freshener.
