That is true for the engine but 'dangle berries' for the gearbox.
Mine is 2003 so they don't come any later and that had gaskets.
-
As already advised Jpat are the kiddies you need to deal with, their service is spot on and they deliver really quickly :y
-
yes just spoke to them 52 pounds for the 2 including delivery

Ouch! Don't recall them being that much before!
If you're an autobahnstormers member I believe there always used to be a member on there who could supply them too. Might be worth a look.
-
Got mine from Dealers about 3 years ago and have still not fitted them. Another job to do, but how much is a new filter and do you have the part number for it :y
-
22 plus vat for the filter

22 plus vat for the filter
The filter is something you definitely don't want to buy from Vauxhall! Although if you're doing the job yourself, cleaning the filter will work.

Yep, clean it with a bit of paraffin or similar. :y

My 1998 AR35 sumps are held on with sealant. Mind you, they've been on and off like a whores drawers over the years ;D

I don't think we had much choice at the time but to slap the sumps back on.

Yep, that's what I had in mind. :y

cleaned and filled with fresh fluid but its still the same :( looks like it needs a new box ? how many hours to change a box
thanks
-
What symptoms are you getting?Do they throw codes? When you'd refilled with fresh fluid you did run it for a short while and then rechecked level with engine running didn't you?Sorry if i'm teaching grandma to suck eggs here.
-
Has nobody thought to go to bmw for the gaskets?
I remember buying bits for my e36 quite cheap
-
yes rechecked the fluid after a short drive and topped up , but it did the same ran for a short while then started to slip and making some metal grinding noises . there was some metal bits in the small sump when i removed it
-
I know he is a fair step down the M6 from you, but speak to Serek, it could well be worth your while.....
Ron.

Really.....??
Wish I knew that before going to Vauxhalls for the gaskets and filter.... cost me about £100 just for two gaskets and a ruddy filter. Just glad I bought the complete stock of fluid from my local B&Q when they was selling the stuff off last year :)

I really do think you should put some bolts in there ! :o

You are going to have to get the gearbox out of the car in any case to get to the thrust washer (if that is the cause).
I have seen people offering good AR25 gearboxes for £75 on here so I think you have a simple choice between repair or replace.
-
thanks , how long to change a box

Different gasket. Been there.
-
Does the 2.6 run the AR25 'box?If it does I think if I were swapping one out I'd look into fitting the AR35 in its place, although I don't know how involved a job that is,but the AR35 is for me the better/stronger box.
-
Looks like the box may well have to come out one way or another :-\ or can it just be dropped enough to allow access to the the thrust washer? I've only assisted at one gearbox replacement as a senior gopher and it was a long hard day, the second one Serek did really quickly and was fairly priced (who would be my choice if push comes to shove) There is an AR35 complete with ECU for £150 on the bay but....it's down in Poole,so transport would have to be factored in plus any labour?fitting which is going to make it an expensive exercise :-\ :-\
-
DLK swopped mine over several years ago and it was a heavy bit of kit. :o
He did insist on use of a friends garage 4 post ramp and without it I fail to see how anybody could replace 1 just on axle stands or ramps.
The genius had it replaced in around 3 hours which included filling with new Dex and checking levels in between gear shifts.A true hard job but he made light work of it :y
-
Agree with you Andrew, the first one was done by James and we hired a workshop...think it was around the Coventry area and I think the hire was a couple of hundred pounds for the day and boy was it a long day, plus consumables, transmission and fitting, fuel etc probably all in around... £500. Second one done by Serek.....2-2.5 hours and including a good transmission courtesy of Joff, probably cost around half of the first one.So I think the moral of the story is don't try it yourself unless you have access to proper facilities, because if you're trying to do it lying on your drive way with the car on a trolley jack and axle stands.....it ain't going to be easy or pretty if it goes tits up :o
-
Had my replacement box done by robsey and his mate. Took about 3 hours. All done on axle stands in a barn.
-
I hate to repeat myself, but I will as it is worth saying twice - go to Serek's!
Get an AR 35 if you can - as I did on my 2.6 - and take it to Serek.
Oh, and why not go to Serek's?
Ron.
P.S. You KNOW what you have to do............

Replaced autobox on my old Elite, incl refill Dex and filter clean, on my drive with axle stands/trolley jacks with help from a mate in around 3 hours. Easy enough job, we were lucky that exhaust dropped out easily. Just be careful removing box - its a weighty old lump.
-
In another life,I attended 3 fatalities where DIY mechanics obviously thought it was a safe method of working on a car.....not for me! I get twitchy even when I'm standing under a four poster that's locked off...but then I'm a big girl's blouse :-* Speak to Serek!! :y
-
Sent an AR35 to be boxed 4 months ago as nobody wanted it even for free, and I have just had the auto gearbox and transfer box out and back in, on my drive on my own, but wish I had had a 4 post lift, cost me £85 for a transmission jack which takes 150KG.
