Title: Bought an old Scirocco
Post by: omegod on 12 March 2016, 22:00:30
Heard of an old VW Scirocco that was languishing as it's owner passed away 6 months ago and was put in touch with his wife who was happy for me to take it on at a reasonable price. It's got water in the cabin which is getting sorted first then a major polishing session. Surprised how well it drives to be honest and is quite nippy, anyone a fan of these ?

My dad had one out on demo when they were new, think the one he demo'd was a 2.5 but it was called a 'Storm' if I remember correctly.
It went well but he didn't buy it in the end. Quite a quick car in its day.  :y

Nope! :)

There was someone else local interested but he upset the owner somehow and she told him where to go, strangely when I went to pick it up it was covered in something very like brake fluid  >:( Fortunately the modern stuff isn't that corrosive and I caught it in time.

Had a Mk1 for a short while many years ago.Think it was a 1.6?Not too bad comfort wise and felt pretty quick-although probably wasn't that quick in reality-handled well.Didn't have it long as it very rarely started on key-tried all sorts to cure it but no joy-although it'd bump start within acouple of yards.Finished up swapping it for an Austin Ambassador.

Last new car I bought was a VW Passat, in 1978, similar I think to the Scirocco. Disappointing, quite unreliable and awful brakes, very prone to fade. I traded in my Morris 1800 HL for it, is that similar to the Ambassador? 1800 was very roomy and quite nice to drive, though with a woolly cable operated gearchange.

The Morris 1800 HL was a badge engineered Austin Princess and had a boot. The Ambassador was the replacement for the Princess & had a hatchback.

It was almost the same as making an Ital out of a Marina  :y  :y  :y ie you set off with a crap car & ended up with a crap car  ::) ::)

I had an Austin 1100, an Austin maxi and an Austin princess. I was a glutton for punishment.

I think so. I used to compete in autotests in those days, and I used the 1800 for that purpose. I think I won some class awards, but it's a long time ago. I used the Passat too, but it had an alarming habit of lifting wheels in flip turns. Happy days.

Yes. Your list of exciting cars is almost endless. ;)

I have to say that the Princess was a much maligned car. I actually quite liked mine.

From memory the GT2 had the 16v engine as used in the Golf GTi at the time.

The GTs were the 8v but think there was a GTX as well.

Friend of mine had an 8v one (think on a B plate) which he had uprated the suspension to fully adjustable, cracking little car that cornered like it was on rails after that, he eventually 'modified' and ran it in the Slick 50 road saloon championships for a couple of seasons in the mid 90s

1.8 carb'd 8v on this one, moves along quite nicely all the same
