Pretty much everything in the military nowdays is out sourced to civilian contractors.
The lowest bidder wins and 'dangle berries' to the lads and lasses on the front line :(

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the situation, but I find it hard to believe these are genuine, especially as my experiences suggest the good is normally reasonably good ;)
Besides, as I said, how can the caterer be blamed for a tinned product?

The caterer is responsible for who / where he buys the produce from.
At the time of issuing brown envelopestendering for the contracts, the supplied end product would have been upto the required standard.
After that and if caught, it will be put down as a momentary lapse in quality control by a third party >:(

How the bleep can a fried egg go mouldy unless it's been standing, cooked for days? It just doesn't ring true.

While I haven't seen it first hand, I know of people who have and I trust their word.
Don't forget the similar crisis with the housing maintenance company. I know of people who have endured most of winter without a working boiler due to their incompetance.
I am very glad I got out when I did.

Many years ago.
Military catering was all in House (catering corps), local wholesalers, should provide fresh produce, which was stringently inspected on every delivery by, a sergeant, if not happy was rejected, and had to be redelivered, same day.
was a Bastid, if there was an officer-mess function, every thing had to be 110%. Then mod thought save a few quid, first local supplies disappeared, the likes of 3663, brakes etc were used, then kitchens were sub-contracted out to the likes of Serco, sodexco, etc, profit over product, mod all over.

Whilst I'm not saying the standard is great, there are bits of this that don't quite ring true....
The maggot in the tinned tomatoes is a prime one. It can't be the caterers fault (assuming all in date, which a joke with tinned goods ::))... Let's put it another way... If your good lady serves you tinned tomatoes with a maggot in, is it her fault or the supplier of the tinned tomatoes? ::)

The ONLY way mould can grow on an egg is it to be left standing, cooked, for several days, and that amount of mould is quite a few more than "several"
Personally, a HUGE pinch of salt (pun intended) to be taken with this "story"

Iirc, you spent all your service time either in hotels, with your lovely lady or in the Snco's mess.
I think its fair to say that the best food in the military is always found in the snco's (or equivalent) mess so I doubt you had to endure some of the shite dealt out in the ranks mess or even the Rupert's mess ;) ;)

Whilst the CHOICE of menu was not as wide as the SNCO's mess - Chips with everything always seemed to be what the "lads" wanted - the standard of catering was never less than very good, and usually bordered on excellent.

Nige, how far up the rank structure did you get during your service ?
I was under the impression that you spent most of your career on the Hercules and finished off still as a NCO at Lyneham ?
As for the junior ranks mess, it would seem that you never had the honour of trying the culinary delights dealt out at Binbrook or Laarbruch ;D

According to the Warrant hanging in the hall, The Queen appointed me a Warrant Officer (Master Aircrew) in June 1988, a rank I proudly held until retirement in September 2008. I turned down Fast Track Commissioning on more than one occasion as it would have meant the end of flying.

If you think that the daily grub in the ruperts mess is fancy cuisine then think again. It was never good enough to justify not going home instead. Portion sizes were poor and it took an age to make the most simple of dishes.
The exception was formal dinner nights where military chefs came in and ran the kitchen. The grub was often always superb.
I never ate in the SNCOs mess, although I survived a few boozy sessions in a couple. I sometimes ate in the Junior ranks mess when on duty to make sure the quality was up to scratch. When it wasn't the military chefs were dispatched to kick arse.
There's a theme emerging here ::)

I hear they performed a frontal lobotomy on entrance but if you was a good lad, you got it back when you left ::)
