Haynes change coolant every two years. Does that apply to GM Dex-Cool 50/50 or is the interval longer? Reading other threads poor or old coolant risks oil cooler and other failures.
-
I changed the 5 year red coolant every 3 years.
4.5 litres for a 50/50 mix in a proper Omega.......not sure about the lesser 4 cylinder cars. :)
-
Thanks. Last time I bought some trade club Dex-Cool they forced 20 litres on me at £19.95, which seemed cheap enough to me to change frequently if worthwhile..
-
Best recommendation seems to be that no matter which coolant you buy be it 2yr,5yr,10yr or whatever,to roughly halve those values for changing.
-
Yup, half the stated life, due to the way it degrades.
So annually for the old style blue stuff, and 2.5yrs for the long life stuff :y

Why worry about it? The cars are old enough, and fussy enough that you're bound to have to work on the cooling system before the coolant needs replacing.

Exactly my point; the worst cooling job on a Capri is that it might need a heater matrix once(if!) it passes about 25 years old. £30 part which requires removing the dash. That's about a 2hour job. Did one last week. Water pump - 15minutes, radiator - 5minutes. Cast iron engines, so anti-freeze(type or even strength) isn't critical.

Best heater matrix I've done was on my Manta ....... 20 mins top including supping your brew :y

Mk3/4/5 Cortina - Open the bonnet, undo the 2 hose clamps, 3 self-tapping screws and it falls out. Put it all back together, and if you filled the kettle for your tea, it will have just boiled!
