Title: Ebay help
Post by: mantahatch on 20 July 2008, 19:40:37
Hello all
I occasionally sell 1 or 2 items of used stuff we no longer require on ebay. It is usually small stuff we no longer need.
My problem is I sold two Volvo centre caps for alloy wheels and the transaction went smoothly, received and gave good feedback. And then the request came for a refund because he bought the wrong item.
I have agreed to reimburse the purchase price, when I get the caps back, but not the postage.
He is asking for a full refund. Am I being unfair ?
If anyone wants to look at the auction it is item number 320272664616

Thanks for any help.

Mike

P.S. sorry for being so long winded.

No mate, unless you gave a specified period you are under no obligation to change or refund anything.

Dont let them take you for a ride eh.

You should not be out of pocket for his mistake. If he drove into town and bought the item and it was the wrong one, when he took it back would he ask for the petrol to be reimbursed?
If it was your mistake then that's a differnet matter.

He bought wrong item, no need for you to refund postage (unless you are a business, in which case you may need to comply with distance selling regs)

what he said! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^! It was his f*** up for buying the wrong thing.
Tesco etc wouldn't refund for you nuying thew wrong ***** , they'll possibly give you a credit note if they're feeling generous.

Hi Mike dont let this put off ebay its not all bad. At the end of the day you put them on ebay for sale with a pic and a very good description and he bought them deal done. If you sent centre caps that did not match what you had for sale and what he had bought then there is a case for him to have a refund but not the postage.

I can honestly say the caps I sent are the ones in picture, a neighbour who had a Volvo gave them to me when we had our Volvo, but I hever had cause to fit them, hence they are new never been fitted but have been sat on the shelf for 2 years.

I disagree........with that.

If you sell summat that is not as advertised....why should the buyer not get his postage money back as well

I bought a phone of ebay a while back.........postage was a £10 iirc .....anyway the phone didnt work.......emailed the seller...he said send it back for a refund........i replied i'll send it back if you pay the postage....plus the cost of the phone and original postage.......he replied cost of phone+p&p refunded.......chuck it in the bin.....dont want it back!!

if your item was 100% accurately as described, no legal obligation whatsoever falls on your side to offer any sort of refund at all

for you to offer a refund, is a gesture of your own goodwill, so explain to the buyer that you wont be refunding shipping

better still, advise him that he'll be better off listing them back on ebay himself!

i agree danny.if i bought the wrong thing by accident i would just re-list it.i think its a bit of a cheek asking for a refund from the buyer if the buyer has done nothing wrong.  :y

I do a bit on ebay and have been lucky so far.
I have looked at you listing, you provided a part number, so in my mind he made the mistake, you are under no obligation at all, indeed I think you are being over generous in refunding, without a handling fee to cover listing costs. The error was his. :(
PS I thought my postage charges were cheap, :y

i bought a car stereo recently off ebay which turned out to have an updated connector and therefore wouldnt fit the corsa, but why send it back when i can relist and get my money back just as easily??

i relisted it and got a profit of £15 AFTER postage and fees came off that!

i dont see why actually you dont just go back on what you said and say "actually mate i listed the item correctly and you made the mistake, i wont refund, you should have no problem selling them back on ebay!"

in my opinion if the items are not as described i'd be wanting my postage back aswell as the seller would have misled/lied, but in this case they're as described
