Title: Maybe a new tent is in order
Post by: TD on 01 April 2016, 18:29:26
Ive had a couple of tents now.....my latest one is pretty hard to put up by myself.

This one ive spotted maybe the answer to my problem.....it seems easy to put up....the only downside is a mechanical pump is the only recommended way of inflating it.....tho I do like the head room....

Thoughts?

I personally still don't think inflatable tents are ready for mainstream yet. Even those on display in stores look deflated and unstable - and I bet they are pumped up daily.  Imagine what they would be like outdoors ;)

Ive seen them fail very early.

Want something quick and easy...Try a Khyam Igloo, had ours about 20 years, the current design has barely changed...cracking tent.

Rarely see em in the shops, but are available online

I've heard the kids in Go Outdoors being told to pump them up by the more useful staff...

Sorry Jimbob.....that's about the same design of my current tent.....its putting up the poles which is the pain, ok for two people, but you'll struggle if theirs only one of you....on the wrong side of 50!

Hi TD. Let me check my understanding of what you do: solo motorcycle, solo tent, heading off to wherever you fancy for some "hermit time"?
WONDERFUL!
Before marriage, children and family commitments, I wanted to do that, but I am now the wrong side of 70 and with the aches, pains and creaky joints that go with it,m so all I can do is dream, and envy you!
Care to share any of your expeditions with us?

Ron.

Tho I would travel to Oxford first (the nearest dealer for me) and check it out.....
For some reason theres no reviews of the 5th berth ..... but there is of the 6th berth (extra air pole).
Most seem to like the product.....there's some complaints, but there is always going to be on reviews.....but if you read the bad reviews, some are nick picking.....others appears they carnt read the instructions , imo anyway
ie some complained the tent buckled in windy conditions....I notice that the air pump they want to sell you separately has a pressure guage on it, presumabley to blow the poles up to a certain pressure . Now if you don't buy this pump or don't have a similar pump already....your going to be guessing how much pressure.

They do have a 2yr warranty

But anyway,  just thinking ahead atm as I have plenty of time on hands at the mo and I couldn't even blow up a ballon at the moment  ;D :(

Hi Ron

No and no....

I like my creature comforts.....so my kit will only fit in a car....I usually take a portable tv as well, as I like to catch up on the morning news and maybe an hour of tv before retiring for the night. Had 4 berth tents in the past.....but the layout of the posted 5 berth, head room, extra space appeals.
Last year I went to Goldencapholidaypark.co.uk, middle of July, wanted to stay 7 nights, but only 4 nights were available.
Arrived about 3pm.....was nearly 6pm by the time I had the tent up and everything organised....and a very damp TD.....tho I did stop for ciggie/beer breaks a couple times.........hence you see the reason I want a tent that's easier to put up  :y

Thanks for the clarification, TD. I love that area of the country and I'm sure I visited that site many moons ago: if it's the one I'm thinking of. it impressed me with its calm and relaxed atmosphere.
I go for comfort nowadays, too, having "graduated" to a tin tent via ridge, frame and trailer tents!

Go for one of the bigger Slumit tents then  :y

Seriously quick to put up, not quite as quick as popup. But nearly, I arrived on a pitch on the bike. Got off, noticed it was starting to spit with rain. In under 5 mins I had the tent off the bike and fully pitched up, I was inside the tent with a beer and looking out.

When I arrived some people next to me had tent material and poles everywhere, clearly been there an hour or two looking at faces/body language.

I got some deathly looks as I sat in my tent, yet arriving just few minutes ago.  :D

Hi tunnie. Looks like I accused the wrong bloke of minimalist camping!
I will have to get my motorbike out of the garage and think about venturing out, if those tents are so simple and quick to pitch. Trouble is, my bike is in about as many peices as it's possible to be in, buried deep in my garage!
It's a 1952 Sunbeam S8.....

Hi Ron!

Yes it's me the biker, quickly went to a 2006 BMW GS, due to my height (6ft5) I found it a very natural bike to use. Many other bikes are just too small, also very tight around the gear shifter for my size 12's.

Plenty of space on the GS for feet, me and my camping gear!  ;D

I've done Isle of Man TT a couple of times (FatherT used to work out there) Also done Scotland in a heat wave! Always wanted to do Europe, either full on tour down to the Alps or a starter tour of the WW2 Beaches.

Have a read of these, a couple of my trips:

Just been Googling your 1952 Sunbeam S8, very nice bike  :y :y

I've parked next to a few bikes from the 50's - The GS is a giant in comparison, I'd love to get a smaller bike like that, just for popping around town here, as the GS is a big, big bike.

Don't think MrsT would approve though  ::)

Just to add to this, the tent I have is fairly wide when packed up, which is a downside.

On the GS it's not wider than the bike, with the side boxes fitted. But looking at photos of that Sunbeam, going to struggle. Will need a tent that compacts more  :-\

Sorry Jimbob.....that's about the same design of my current tent.....its putting up the poles which is the pain, ok for two people, but you'll struggle if theirs only one of you....on the wrong side of 50!

I have a Khyam Freelander which is similar, but bigger and tall enough to stand up in. That was one of my requirements, along with space to sit and for it to be easy to erect and strike. I use at car shows etc, so size and weight weren't an issue, although it is reasonably compact. It wasn't cheap, but I consider it good value.

These use four poles which are integral to the tent; you unroll it, hold the top plate in one hand and snap the first row of hinges into place. That's rigid enough to stand up, so go around doing the bottom hinges. Peg the corners, slide the only loose pole through its clips and peg the guyropes to hold it up. Then you go inside, clip the top and back of the sleeping compartment in place and peg it's front corners.
I can have a beer in my hand less than five minutes after getting out of the car. In the rain. When arriving with friends I usually end up putting up the gazebo etc as I'm first to finish.

Tanks Nick, that's worth considering, altho a slightly larger one, might suit better  :y

You only need one person for this....everything is ready assembled, its literally take it out the bag and unfold the poles and click into place.  2 mins tops.  extremely easy.  Almost unfolds like an umbrella

Not huge though...plenty of sitting up room, but thats it.

I've often thought about building a teardrop, but I can't chuck it in the loft for the 49 weekends a year I don't use it.

You would be amazed what you could pull with a 1.6 TDi, in fact you'd be spoilt for choice.

My Montana 6p can be put up single handedly, but still needs 2 to lift the bag out of the boot ;D.

Fantastic tent with loads of room, but not for you I think due to shear weight

Yes I'm always amazed at Lord Opti's claims of what he could pull with his Austin Princess back in the day!  ::)  ;D
