I had to clean the little filter which the screen washer pump sits on, as mounted on the washer bottle at the front of the car. After only 2 months the black gunge had come back with a vengeance, so both pumps out (screen & headlight) and a good flush out will hopefully keep the mouldy black stuff at bay. Just wondered if a drop of bleach added to the fluid may help, or not? Is there an anti-mould additive available, or just a matter of keeping things clean with regular flushes?
On a similar note, it appears the same pump provides water to the front screen and rear screen (estate), depending on which lever is operated on the column.... so the question - is there a solenoid valve or something which directs the flow of water to the front or the back, depending on which operation is selected?

I believe screenwash includes an anti-mould additive ad well as detergent. Are you using screenwash? If so, worth changing to another brand?
I confess I have no screenwash in mine at present, and haven't for a while and show no mould/gunge buildup. I did (at great annoyance to my missus) fill it with some white vinegar, to descale, dissolve, and flush out and rubbish that had build up in the last 20 years. That was maybe 3 months ago. I'd recommend anyone try the same, it's pence to do, smells a bit for a few days, but you're guaranteed a fresh set of hoses, and the vinegar won't attack and rubber or plastic which certain cleaning products will.

Just use a decent screen wash and you won't get a build up of gunge

Most estate / hatchback pumps are dual pipes, by revering the voltage to the pump sends it to one or other.

Thanks for the replies. Concentrated washer fluid (cheap stuff) almost gone now, but if the black stuff comes back will try the vinegar :y

Try a few squirts of this stuff everytime you fill up, -

Its good gear I use it everywhere, screen wash, Bathroom, Kitchen, Dishwasher stained Tea cups, PVC Window Frames etc, it take a while to kick in, but when used regularly it really does clean stuff up and stop mold, mill-due etc, cant recommend it enough.
Contains a tad of bleach so be careful with clothes etc.

and herein lies your problem. As above, use DECENT screen wash and you won't get the gung

Ahhhh.... but in my defence, the cheap stuff might not have already been in there, just the cheap stuff topped up today.
What might be pertinent is the fact the tank was low, so a lot of air / oxygen to help the gunge grow? :-[
