Today the N/S heat sheild on Cat has finally parted company with the car.
Is it worth trying to fabricate a replacement,purely to protect the cat,and what would be the best material to use or arent they worth worry about,

Are you talking about insulation on the down pipe? Or protection for the car from CAT heat?

Ah, ok I can't directly advise not had that yet! I've replaced the down pipe insulation on one of mine.
I would have thought get a replacement shield of a scrapper and pop it on?

I didn't refit the heatshields after replacing the handbrake cable. Most of the mounting studs broke and I was working against the clock in the rain, so decided not to wrestle them back over the exhausts. Having noticed no difference with them in a heap in the garden and not on the car, I installed them firmly in the bin and haven't worried about them since.
The pattern cat on the N/S of my car didn't come with a heatshield either.

Vaguely remember pulling them off my old Elite as the mountings had broken and were wrattling like a vicars false teeth on a Sunday sermon. ;D
Will crawl under car in next day or so and remove the bit that is still hanging in the wind and the oversized jubilee clip that was holding them on which has now slide further down the exhaust pipe .
Doudt they made much difference any way and tend not to park in dry fields too ofetn so hopefully wont cause issues ;)

do you mean the clam like covers on the pre cats i wonder. mine both fell off, i retrieved them and put 2 jubilee clips tightly round each. i think they are still there. i assume they exist to keep the heat in the pre cats so they operate efficiently as well as protecting grass and bodywork.

On the Bullet, that hasn't had the underside heatshields for probably 10 years. Nor has it had the downpipe shields for 5 or 6 ::)

Yes its the clam like heat sheilds on the pre cats.They were originally secured with a large jubilee clip at one end as the welds were securing the front of it ,however think the welds have finally given up and as onlly being secured by the jubille they have diparted company.
I just wanted to see whet other members had done...if anything...as unsure if they were required to retain heat in the cat or just protect the underside from excessive heat

Bit of both, the Cats are more efficient and emissions are better when the Cats are nice and hot. Also apart from dry grass fires risk etc, the Shields also protect nearby pipes / wiring under the car from potential excessive heat.

The last one of the cat heat shields decided to come off as I was driving up the road... Didn't bother going back for it as I decided the back wheel going over it would probably mean it was the wrong shape ::) :-X

Think that must of been what happened to mine although I didnt witness its departure.
As they are pressumably not available as a part or an aftermarket option is there solution of material for fabrication.

Mine used to rattle on tickover from time to time, but reading this I've just realised I've haven't heard the rattle for a while. :-\

unless you're living in a very hot country I wouldn't worry about them, here in northern Scotland I just take them of a chuck um. If you do replace them try to re fit them with something other than steel nuts As it's the dissimilar metal corrosion between the steel and aluminium that causes them to come loose in the first place.

Not sure how you reached that conclusion ??? The fixing nuts are plastic...

Most vehicles have steel nuts which is what causes the problem with the aluminium shields.
