Do the diesel Omegas come with auto as well as manual?
-
Only the 2.5TD, Manual only with the 2.2DTi
-
Also to get the best performance out of the 2.5TD it needs to be chipped 'Back to BMW Spec' as it was detuned in the Omega, but that takes it's toll on the auto box. The AR25 was fitted to 2.5TD's and it was borderline on it's support for the TD's power, so if you chip it you need to put in a stronger AR35 from a 3.0/3.2
In standard auto form, the 2.5TD are not that great on fuel really, especially around town.

Totally agree, having owned both 2.5TD Auto and Manual, it has to be a Manual to get reasonable MPG.

Yup, when little fatty had one (pre-chipped), my 2.2 petrol (no LPG!) was more economical....
Only makes sense to be chipped and mostly motorway use in my view.

Thanks for all that, so I guess I am looking for a 2.2 manual estate.
Anyone got a nice one to sell? '03?

Any old common-rail diesel is a liability waiting to happen. On a £1000 car any potential fuel savings are likely to be pissed away by the cost of the common faults. That's whether you fix them or replace the car.
If you must have a diesel, then you need to buy it new. That is the only way to influence its long-term durability.
