Yes, as it never got the 4.2, which are the only Audis that aren't for girls.

I'd have an A3, with the right engine, but not practical for my needs.

Why are you asking people who drive old barges if an A3 is OK be seen in? If you're ok with an omega, you're pretty much past caring.

My lad had one with the paddle shift gear change, quite fun to drive really. :y

I had a crack in an s3 before signing for the BMW. My thoughts:

- I found the interior to be dull. While I'm sure it's very well screwed together, so is swmbo's yeti, I don't see where the premium cost goes, from the inside at least.

- nice to drive, but not as balanced as the bm.

- space in the back is good and the car's practical. But considering you can have a skoda superb or golf for the same money (or less), that doesn't seem like a good reason to buy one.

In short, I couldn't see a reason to buy one over other products in the VAG stable, unless you just want one. In which case, you don't need a better reason than that.

No argument here. If my ar$e would have fitted into a focus rs seat, I'd have had one of those.  :y A mate of mine has a fiesta st, again, great little cars.

One of my neighbours had an A3 for about 10 years. Used to watch him driving past in it every morning when I was ironing my shirt (pink job, I know, but..).

Anyway, the only thing that stood out about that car is that the back numberplate was fitted wonky. I didn't even have a clue what it was until I was told that it was an A3. Such is the level of blandness they exude.

Was thinking the same ;D Get the biggest engine you can afford, then when you're bored from annoying the Audi driver behind by being in front, you can annoy them even more by pulling away from them :y

Or put it another way, would you rather be in an Audi being constantly irritated, or in a Focus without a care in the world ::)

Depends a lot on which engine you have and the actual age of A3 you are looking it. Dispite all the negative comments so far, some of which are opinions, rather than observations from experiences having owned /driven one and not fact.....
My wife had an 11 plate 140 bhp 2.0TDi from work for quite a while, which was a torquey engine, with a good performance yet delivering excellent mpg. Felt very solid to drive and quite 'planted' on the road. Trim levels vary; this was a Sport model, which had a good middle of the range trim level, which felt well put together. Both sons have A3's of varying ages, a 6 plate and a 10 plate, probably drive them hard, but they are very reliable, and relatively cheap and easy to maintain.
As Focus' have been brought up, a couple of friends of mine have them, one a 04 plate 1.6 petrol, the other a 11 plate 1.4 (I think) diesel, yes good cars and pleasant to drive, cheap to run but don't feel quite as solid as the Audi and the build quality is not quite as good. Depends on how much you can afford of course, what you want the car for and personal preferences - as with any car.
No doubt the Focus lovers will now give me both barrels........ :y

I drove a new S3/RS3 whatever they're called, with a manual box. I seem to remember 350 bhp ish? It was fast, very fast, but in an unfulfilling kind of way that always left you wanting more. The torque was limited in 1st gear which was obvious and just made it seem restrained and boring. The cabin was very small, although I am 6"1', and the visibility was extremely poor, front, back and sides but I find the same with many new cars. The suspension seemed like it had been removed and the ride was terrible, which is a big no no, and IMO the appearance is to be ridiculed, bling city. I saw a saloon version of the a3 too, it looked like it was an A4 that had been rear ended by a lorry at 60 mph, it was a horrible squashed down little ugly thing that reminded me of micro machines. So is it for girls? Yes, because you'd only ever buy it if you liked the colour.

The Omega is going in for MOT tomorrow so I always get a bit twitchy and start looking at ebay/autotrader in case she fails catastrophically.  ::)

I've spotted a Black A3 2.0 TDi Sport that might be a good deal.  :-\

Boils down to price... if we're talking a few hundred quid, then a Focus makes alot more sense... if were talking a few grand, then the world is your oyster, and an A3 shouldn't even register ;)

Of course, the Omega might even pass :y

I have also driven the S3 - stunning performance, which made you want to give it full beans wherever you went! Regarding the suspension, the latest ones have 'drive select' which allows you to alter the suspension, engine and gearbox /throttle response to suit your own preferences. Certainly if it was set in Dynamic mode, then it is a real bone shaker with stiff suspension, but put it in comfort or auto mode, or in individual to set each component to your liking. I preferred the tiptronic version to the manual - lightening fast gear changes, without the delay between gear changes as on the manual versions, but all this comes at a very costly price to buy and run!
The saloon version of the A3 in my opinion, looks great - proportions just right, and I think it looks better than the A4.
It wouldn't do if everyone liked the same things - be a very clinical world then!
