So the father-in -law has bought himself a "cheap runaround" , A 2002 Omega 2.2 Petrol Auto..... only thing is it has come with a few little niggles ..... first thing he had done was a full Oil,plugs filters service but he is complaining of poor startups when left sat for a while... as im unlucky enough to own a toolbox and fault code reader and a driveway i've been nominated to take a look and see if he has bought a lemon ...... the car is tidy enough for 400 quid however it seems that these issues may be pretty common on this particular engine after a quick google...... however google something random like cut.... graze or peanut butter and im sure that too will come back somewhere along the line as "may cause cancer" so I came to the place of knowledge ( hopefully ).
So while I take some time to look around this forum i'd appreciate any help on the subject and leave you with a few error codes to give me an opinion on.
P1781 - Manufacturer Control
P0170 - Fuel Trim Bank 1
Some older codes I got that did clear and didnt come back was..
P0560 - System Voltage ( I think this was cured with a new battery )
P0706 - Transmission Range, Sensor A circuit range/ performance
I took a brief look at the throttle body and it was black bright... needs a really good clean and when you open up the throttle you can see loads of oil down at the bottom,the two small breather pipes from the rocker cover to the air feed pipe were gunked up and one or more of the plugs did have oil in there ( all cleaned up with new plugs now )... the cam sensor has been replaced a few weeks ago too as his other son in law saw this was a common fault too but now we just dont want him throwing money at its a horror story once you start looking up on it... as in
Cam sensors,02 sensors,knackered throttle body, coilpacks,plugs,crankshaft sensor,MAF sensor,Pistonrings bla bla bla

I'd be looking at the Cam sensor first, then clear the codes and see if anything else returns.
Cam sensors well known on these for chucking up those extra codes which wont be valid
These are fussy, so stick to a genuine sensor, not an ebay cheapy.

These are fussy, so stick to a genuine sensor, purchased from a genuine Vx dealer, that YOU genuinely have to walk into, not an ebay cheapy.

Thanks for that, I can confirm that he did replace the cam sensor.... However it was just from a local motor parts place, 40 quid... So it won't be a genuine item.
I'm looking at stripping the throttle body and a big breather pipe... I cleared the two smaller ones

Genuine are arong the £70 mark retail

There's a guide for this... the breather pipe pipe up from the sump is just as likely to be full of muck ;)

Yeah seen the sump breather guide, the two smaller rocker pipes were full of muck so the main culprit must be just as bad if not worse... i'll hopefully look at this for him at the weekend.... I better order a T/B Gasket too while im at it :)

Well had the sump breather off and to he honest it was quite clean, a bit of crispy crud but nothing too major.
However I did take the throttle body off and gave it a good clean, the tiny hole was completely blocked up so cleared and cleaned that.... Not sure what it is but it is now clear :)

How does it run now?
I don't think the problem is the cam sensor, I think you have been lucky fitting a non genuine sensor.
My old 2.2 always used to complain of the cam sensor when it acted up, which btw was hot starts, cold starts was fine.
Plus the car would go into 'limp home' mode, which the OP hasn't mentioned.

It's the inlaws car so I really don't know how it runs or has been running ... I've just asked him to monitor and see how it runs, but tbf I now need a tb gasket so I'll have it back within a few days anyway once the new one comes... By the way are these gaskets a generic part because on ebay the same part number is listed for alsorts from corsa's to omegas.

I'm starting to think this car has a head gasket issue, it's losing coolant :(
How hard is it to change head gasket on these and is there a good guide with torque settings ect?

The h.b.v sometimes leak on these..and they can be proned to head gasket failure if not looked after properly with regular water/antifreeze changes....before getting involved in h.g changed....have you had the system pressure tested....ask to have the top up container sniff tested,or buy / borrow a head test kit..bottle of blue fluid plus the container to put it in.... :y

OK firstly what's a h.b.v??
Secondly I was going to day that the coolant smells and has lost all colour.... It's just like mucky water now.
When checking for mayo in the usual places ( non present anywhere) I did think there was a bit of pressure when removing the oil filler cap.... I'm guessing that's not normal either

sorry...its the heater by pass valve....looking from the front of the engine ,,left hand side below the brake servo..burried amonst the hoses its a round plastic type thing with 3 water hose going into it...when you operate the heater from inside the car it turns the heater on or off by air vac that is supplied by the plastic air vac pipe that fits onto the top of the h.b v.

If the coolant is that mucky,,you could always flush the system through until it runs clear.then bleed the system to get the heater and coolant going through without any air leaks..to at least get it back to normal,,.there is a...how to do these jobs on the maintainance guides on here..hope that helps you :y

And flushing the system is definitely on the cards.... I'd just like to locate/solve or fix the problem before filling it with coolant again :)

It's a sealed plastic unit that you can check for leaks. A new one is available for under a tenner.

With the scuttle off it's a bit fiddly. The worst part of the job is undoing the 3 spring hose-clamps.

Does anyone have any tips on testing this h.b.v to see if it's at fault and also a part number for a replacement if needed

When hbv went on mine there was no need for testing it was dumping water at an impressive rate so was obvious.Assuming same part fits[mine's a V6]the part number I have is 95517483.

you should be able to visualy see any leaks at the h.b.v. :y
