worth it?

No way can a constructive answer be provided with such little detail ;)
Do a search, I've put plenty of stats up.

Put a little bit more effort into your posts, and you might get a better answer.
What miles do you do?
What kind of miles? motorway/a-roads

a bit hasty maybe, my apologies.
8-10k a year or so, mostly a and b road with a bit of mway.
reasonably mechanically competant so would look into doing it myself...

Ok,
Garage job, it costs between 1.2k - 2.5k can vary a lot depending on area, how good the work is.
£700 for DIY.
At 10k a year, you would prob pay it back within 18 months at current prices.
Saloons you put a 80L tank in the boot, and loose 40% of your boot, and the abilty to put large items in with the seats down.
Estates IMO are better to LPG, donut tank in the spare wheel well, reduced capacity at 50L and does not have the large range, but you loose none of the practicality. No space is lost.
Make sure you got SGI (injection) rather than mixer.

roughly how far forwards will the tank be in the boot? in line with the spare wheel or further back?

Saloon I assume? Its right at the back.
Back of the tank will almost be touching the back seats.
Spare wheel can be removed easily. I am sure someone here would have a pictures...

Could you not put a donut tank in the spare wheel well of a saloon.

Running costs on petrol at 118p/litre = 26 p/mile
Running costs on gas at 58 p/litre = 15 p/mile
Saving = 11 p/mile or 41% ...
Simple maths proves its the way to go . :y :y :y
