Title: '05 Plate Zafira 1.6 petrol Oil leak /disappearance problem.
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 12 June 2016, 17:36:33
Hi Chaps,

This is not mine, its my brothers  ::)

He rang me up the other day saying his oil was low & the oil light was flickering. Upon checking the oil there was nothing on the dipstick (the one in the engine, not me brother) ;D ;D ;D I told him to (obviously) put some in, which he has done & filled it to the full mark, this was on Thursday. Today he rings me again to say there was no oil showing on the dipstick (no light this time) however he was just checking it to see how it was.

I'm not familiar with this engine really, do they use oil once they get of a certain age & mileage??? His has done 76k. He says he can't see any leaks underneath from the sump or filter area, there are no patches on his drive and the engine bay is dry. Only leaves me one answer - Its burning it??? BUT he says there is no blue smoke when driving or stationary????

Any ideas???

I guess it depends how many miles he's done in it since......
I once had a Vectra that used to burn a litre of oil every 1k miles (which is basically min to max on the dipstick) but then it had been a company car before my ownership and had been serviced every 20k (vx service plan) so no doubt that caused the engine wear. Servicing it in my ownership was carried out every 10k.....and stopped it declining any further.

If its not leaking it.....and not ending up in the coolant system (unlikely as other problems would be showing) it must be burning it ..... but to notice smoke out of exhaust.....its got to bad tbh.....odd puff of smoke when driving might not be noticed in the rear view mirror  :-\

Vw officially say 1 litre for every 1000km on the pd engines...

If he's run it dry, then it will consume oil faster due to rapid wear issues...

Jason....tell your tight-arsed, useless bro that you are in no fit state to be looking at his old bus and to get it to a garage. He may/may not do that, but I doubt he'll ask you again. :)

Really, hadn't noticed  ::) point is if manufacturers think it's acceptable from new, all bets are off. But running it low won't have helped any ;)

What does your Snot box manual suggest as acceptable oil consumption then...

I ain't got any info on it but I think the Vaux spec. is somewhere around 1 litre / 1000k so you may be right HKT, he put 5/30 in it as directed by the autoparts chap, I thought it would be 10/40??????

Now it's known to be using it at that rate, he'll know to check it regularly  :y

5/30 is fine for that engine :y

Yeah right,he's bloody useless with cars as I've said before! Usually muggins here who looks after his cars  :( He moaned when it failed the MOT the other month on a rear spring that had snapped & because I couldn't do it with my knackered body. Got a mate who replaced both for £140 for him which I didn't think a bad price really. Still weren't happy.
