I have a leaky water main and the water company want me to install a new supply as the old one comes down the back of 3 of the neighbours houses before coming to my house. The neighbours are quite keen to get rid of it as well..... ::)
So the plan is to run a new main into my house from the street and the water company will 'Tee' off the main and do all the work in the street FOC. :y So then I have to bring the new blue plastic pipe in, connect to the existing plumbing and jobs a goodun! :y
The problem is with how the internal plumbing has been done, as it probably means that part of the kitchen floor will have to be dug up and the kitchen is so old that as soon as the units are moved I'm sure they will crumble to dust! ::) ;D
So it's looking like it's going to be an expensive job all in all, which I may be able to claim on my buildings insurance. So really the question is has anyone recently made a claim on their buildings insurance and how much did your premiums go up after? ???
I'm just weighing up the pros and cons of going down the insurance route, DIY or getting builders in. :-\ One for Lord Opti I guess! ;)

Can you not dig a trench down the side of your house footings where the water main enters your property and join just before it enters your property? Minimal disruption outside, no disruption inside. :-\

No not really as there are different levels, steps and the sewer to contend with. :(

There are some kits now that let you run the pipe up the outer wall in an insulated jacket before it passes through the wall at cupboard level.
Meets all the water regs and used more and more on new builds and refurbishment

The problem is that the existing main comes in the back of the property and the new will basically come in through the front door off the street. So it will be a long run outside and not really practical to bury it. :-\
What complicates the situation slightly is that the existing main is a shared supply between my house and the house at end of the terrace (the two mid terrace houses between us have had their own supplies fitted over the years), so there is only one stopcock for the two houses! ::)

A common thing in Liverpool when 'a bezzie mate' asks for a favour.
Works equally well on cars. :)
