Title: Brakes question Omega 2.0 CD 2000 x reg
Post by: Jazzyj123 on 18 June 2016, 19:46:23
I've gotta change the brakes on my dad's vauxhall omega (as above) and I'm trying to order the pads and discs but apparently there's 2 different types of calliper and brakes. How on earth do I find out which kind I need?

Can't remember the chassis break point but unless its a 2.0 8valve or a very early 2.0 16v then they are all the same, what year is your car?

It's a 2000 x reg vauxhall omega. One of the first full facelift models. Apparently there are lucas type callipers and Teves type or something?

The discs should be 280mm

The pads will need checking mine have the wider pad the the wings on each side. My old 2.5 cdx had the 296mm and the shorter pads

Lucas/ Girling  use the longer pads with wing shaped guides
Teves are the shorter style

Where are you buying from?

I got a "Brake Kit" from the Dealer.

Genuine GM, and comes in a big HEAVY box with Discs and Pads :y

Was a bit more more than after market ones, but not that much more and worth the extra few quid to make sure GM Genuine  :y

It will have 296mm front discs.  Pads are around £15 for GM Tradeclub ones.  GM discs and pads are around £90.  In both cases, sensors are extra (about £7 for GM on tradeclub)

Our local dealer say that the trade club only gets you discounts on parts that are fitted by them not stuff you buy to take away

Quite of opposite. Assuming they are a TC dealer of course, not all dealers are.

Ahhh I see. Either way we can't quite afford £90. What's the best place to get oem quality pads and discs from?

Front discs and pads are about £70 at Eurocarparts.

I have tried a fair few in an effort to save a few pennies, and they are all universally shite, both in performance and disc durability.

Hence, I can only ever recommend the TC (or OE) stuff.  TC is generally near OE quality at aftermarket prices.

Fair enough. Will have to go with cheap ones for now and see what they're like. He doesn't do a lot of spirited driving so they should be fine.

Don't know yet, the only ones I've used have been on the back of sister's Hyundai for a month which is hardly a test. It's the pads that matter; I won't buy Apec for instance as even with my gentle driving faded to useless in three hard stops.

I have about 1/4million miles in various vehicles using  Pagid parts with no issues.

I think recently, Pagid seem to have gone downhill....   ....unless they make a unique, esp naff, version so euroshiteparts can still make a heavy profit when they sell them for 99p?

I'm using pagid disc's and GM pads.

Discs are wearing fine, if you wait a day or so there's. normally a ecp discount code appears, or have a look at carparts4less.co.UK.

That's a type of Ferrodo pad, not a part number... arguably not suitable for a gently driven 2.0, 1.7 ton car... better suited to summat with 3-4 times the power and brakes to match ::)
