Title: F up diff nut turns... Help!!!!

Hi guys changed the diff seal on my v6 yesterday...counted 11 turns drove it after work and they is a nasty noise from the diff. I know I counted 11 turns....anybody know of the torque setting if any for the diff pinion nut or is it f up now???

The pinion has two taper roller bearings with a 'crush' spacer in between. The inner races of the bearings are a tight fit on the pinion shaft

On first assembly the big nut is tightened up until the inner races start to crush the spacer. The nut is then tightened until the correct preload is applied to the bearings.

About 10 years ago I foolishly allowed an MOT test centre to fit a new pinion seal on my Carlton (the leaking seal was an advisory). That diff was Donald Ducked  within 20 miles of it being fitted >:(

Just to add - there isn't a torque setting for the nut the important thing is the preload on the taper roller bearings.

Common sense says that if you put the nut back exactly where you found it then you will be OK. Problem is that I think you need to be more precise than "11 turns" - I think that you need to mark a line on the end of the shaft & nut so that you get it exact.

It was mark with centre punch n tippexd lol, don't know what happened took off the flange the pinion was loose turned it another and marked up again seems ok no noise, I just hope I get past the 20 mile mark then I'll know for sure! Thanks

i had a new seal fitted to the diff on my dads 3.2 a year or so ago., took it to hardy engineering in leatherhead to make sure the pre load was set correctly, all good untill the cam belt rollers gave up the goast and trashed the top end :'( take it to a specalist and get it checked and set properly.

If it is noisy then it is already scrap. Good second hand ones can be had for buttons so I wouldn't bother paying a specialist to tell me

You cant set the preload reliably on a used part.
