Title: One for the technically clever peeps
Post by: TD on 26 June 2016, 17:21:44
Wifi router works absolutely fine most of the time....

Plug in a power line adaptor into one of the ports (when its powered up) and it still works fine

However reboot the router with the power  line adaptor plugged in and internet access is a no no (even tho I have all green leds on the front of the router)

Unplug the power line adaptor and still no internet, reboot router with power line adaptor unplugged and internet is restored.....

Why????

Here you go: power up router, plug in and connect power line adapter, DONT reboot. All working fine  :)
Same advice as your lawnmower. Fickin leave things alone.  ;D

Remember Tommy Cooper. Doc, it hurts when I do this. Well don't do it.  ;D

Ahhh......bit difficult not to reboot it....as when I'm not in or gone to bed, I turn it off!  :P

TBH, Since slowly changing old inefficient equipment, like fridge/freezer, cooker, gas boiler, changing lighting to leds etc, my energy bill has nearly halved.....was paying £75/month, now I'm paying £39 and that's for leccy and gas......so why leave a device on that isn't needed  ;)

Saving yourself maybe a tenner a year there.

Maybe, but every little helps  :)

I completely understand your reasoning, but things like this can become compulsive. I tried to get the best economy I could from my astra for a while, but I had to stop, I was becoming a fickin nuisance on the road.  ;D
So now I just try to get the best economy without being totally anal about it.

Doing that cut my leccy bill by two thirds!, and we are not like some who leave unwanted lights on. :y

I moaned at wifey for leaving the kitchen lights (spots) on. When I checked, they were 4W gu10's. So using a massive 16W. I let her leave them on while she goes to the toilet now.

Yes, I understand some people like to watch. ::)

Most likely a shit router. But could be powerline stuff is trying to do something clever, like dns proxying.

Does it fix itself, if given time?

Don't know.....when I realise the problem I just unplug the power line adaptor and reboot the router. Next time I forget the power line is plugged in and I don't get internet....I'll have to check the settings in the router to see if DNS /etc is set to the correct settings for my ISP  :y

There's no problem with a Powerline adaptor that chucking it in the bin won't solve. ;)

Makes me wonder if the Powerline adaptor goes into some different mode when the router is not there. Could just be that the Ethernet ports don't negotiate properly when one end initiates it.

I recall a Broadcom chipset issue with either the auto-neg or auto MDIO

Try streaming video over wifi......it aint gonna work....ive tried  ;)
So unless I run cat5 cable about the house the powerline adaptors do their job  :)
Theres one on the server, another on the router and one on the tv  :)

The powerline adaptor connected to the router goes into 'sleep/standby' mode when the router is off

You need better Wifi then - the one here can easily max out my fibre line...  ...in fact, the Access Point needs to be on a gigabit connection, as it can max out a Fast Ethernet connection.

I'd always recommend cat5 over any other option such as wifi or powerline.  However, that's not to say powerline adapters have no place...   ...but the cheap ones are more trouble than they are worth. I have had reasonable success with BT Homespots - https://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-wi-fi-home-hotspot-500-kit-075598-9BRT.html - which gives me 2 Ethernet and a wifi hotspot in the garage, but it's outperformed by the Wifi I've currently got in the house.
