Is there a universal/typical standard (above ground) height measurement for mounting a tow-ball for caravan-towing vehicles in the U.K?
I`m mounting a 'maneouvering' 50mm. tow-ball to the front of my old Landy and expect it to be used mostly for positioning visitor`s caravans in the tight quarters of Debs` garden, so want the hitch to be the 'right' height on the drop-plate. :y

Shinbreakers are generally mounted 4cm below the kneecap in my experience. >:(

Same as the back, Debs??
My dad's got one mounted to the towing eye of his Rangie; about 2 holes down on a drop plate from the underside of the eye - if that helps?

;D.......I haven`t got a ball on the back of Lazarus Landy; I only (normally) use NATO pintles as all my big-girl`s 'stuff' has pintle-rings. ;)

Apparently
From the Caravan clubs handbook page 640 (1999 / 2000 edition ) it says the coupling ball is 50 mm diameter and when measured from ground to ball centre should be between 350 and 420 mm (vehicle fully laden - but not with caravan attached) in accordance with BS AU 113c or ISO 1103.

Funny how knowing why the forum knows I am online bugs me and towbars really really don't. Guess I'm just fickle... :)

No need to be posh!! About 4 inches below the kneecap is about right, alas..

Hi Debs For normal caravan towing its 13" approx to top of ball from ground but you can also fit a plate on that allows you to alter height by moving it up & down on 4x4 / Land Rovers like this
http://www.autow.co.uk/towbars/drop_plates_prices_186.html
In case its not just right ! usually see em on 4x4 's as they ride higher ! :y

No worries Debs. Although other's minds are boggling over more basic things, I tried to rise above it. But I can't quite clear the fact that there's a bl :o :ody ISO for it!
