Title: Steering wheel play
Post by: Webby the Bear on 29 June 2016, 19:30:07
Evening guys,

I noticed over the last couple of weeks that I have slight back and forward play in my steering wheel. Just so we are clear it is back and forward (not left to right like when you steer). It's annoying me cos it makes a slight clicking noise and I can feel it in my hand.

Is it possible the securing wheel centre bolt needs tightening?  :-\ if so, pop the airbag off and tighten?

Any tips or advice would be GRRREEEEEEEAAAT  :y :y :y :y

Had something very similar on the first Omega I had around 2000,being a 1997 CDX.

My mechanic of the day ,mentioned something about a bearing or coupler on the bottom of the steering column .Found replacement from what was originally,Las Jacarandias..now Steve Brown of Omega breakers in Slough.

Had it fitted and problem cured although sorry cant offer any further help :)

Thanks Amba.

that would make sense cos I reallydidnt think the steering wheel bolt would have come loose.

ill see if I can strip the trim down and feel for some play........unless someone has another suggestion to add to the mix  :y

just to reiterate as my explanations are at best terrible  ;D the movement is not turning.... its when I grab the wheel and push or pull on it i.e. towards the engine bay or pull towards the rear of the car.

Either the wheel is loose on the column, or the clamp at the base of the column is loose/damaged.

Thanks Nick.

so to check wheel bolt tightness...whip airbag off and presumably the bolt will present itself.

and if not that then to check the clamp at the base....do I need to get any plastic trim off or just stick my head near the pedals?

cheers  :y

Something like that. I vaguely remember that it's a horrible job on a Mini, if that helps ;D
