Title: Wishbone rear bushes.

I'm refurbing a pair of GM wishbones, replacing bushes and ball joints. Polybushes and ball joints are sorted. Now need rear bushes.
Is the accepted wisdom still to use genuine GM rear bushes ? If so,anyone got a part number and price please ?

Next problem will be how to get them into the wishbones. Got some kind of press and a fair bit of expertise available at work, so hopefully that will solve that problem. But any usefull info / benefit of experience would be appreciated.  :)

Sounds enough to pay, but given the lifespan, worth it.

Got a mate to borrow the press from work to push them in. In theory you can file and emery down the wishbones, then bash them in / use a vice (I tried this.....nope!). I'd rather chuck £2 in the coffee/tea/beer money tin at a greasy garage and get them to do it.  :) a suitable large socket or chunk of scaffold pipe etc will help ram them in nicely.  :y

I believe the accepted practice is to burn the old ones out?!  :o

Only by people who have never tried it!


Seriously, pressing them out isn't doesn't require much force, is quicker than burning them, and makes a lot less mess.

If you have the gear at work it's straight-forward to press the old one out and press the new one in.
I did mine with a small press consisting of a metal frame (think cider press and you'll get the idea) and a two ton bottle jack. Make sure it is supported in the right places, sits nice and flat with clear space for the bush to be pressed out the other side. I've got two thick steel plates with birds beak cut-out to allow for this. I pressed out with a bell shaped socket and pressed in with the same socket.  :y

I cut the old out with a saw, then push new ones in with a press.

Rear ones generally press out very easily. A vice would probably do it.  Fronts are more of a pig, so without a reasonable press, most cut through them and cold chisel them out.
