Is it still ok these days to give the ignition a squirt as key is getting sticky

I have the same problem. The usual advice on here is to refurbish the lock before it siezes altogether, but I'm slightly (a lot!) afraid to do that so I intend to give the new type of WD40 a try - the spray of PTFE dry lubricant - to counter the dire warnings I've read on here regarding gluing the lock and making things worse.

Do yourself a big favour: follow the guide on fixing the lock cylinder(or buy a new one, they're not expensive). Using WD40 on it will give a false feeling of security, but will have no benefit whatsoever.

The cylinder will eventually lock up completely, usually when the car is in a really awkward place like a multi-storey car park.

In the meantime, always park with the wheels straight, don't engage the steering lock, and remove all the junk from your keyring.

I KNEW I would be berated for saying that! Ok, I'll go to the scrappy and get an old one to practise on before risking the lock on the car.....
Nick, when you wrote "don't engage the steering lock", did you mean don't lock the car?

The steering lock(the one on the column that stops you turning the wheel) doesn't affect the door locks!

If you must use something, use a pencil to rub some graphite onto the key ;)

I found the most difficult part was getting the lock out. Refurbishing by following the guide was a doddle. New key slides available here: http://www.nwkeys.co.uk/Portal.aspx?page=43&cat=131&prod=7389 :y

Best to use a lock lubricant based on graphite - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=lock+lubricant&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xkasp+lock+lubricant.TRS0&_nkw=kasp+lock+lubricant&_sacat=0 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=lock+lubricant&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xkasp+lock+lubricant.TRS0&_nkw=kasp+lock+lubricant&_sacat=0)  HTH :y
