Title: Chilled Glove Box
Post by: FRE07962128 on 14 July 2008, 17:44:21
With the lovely hot weather we are now having I am missing my lovely chilled glove compartment that kept drinks cool in my Senator.  8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

It has also made me remember that I had the same on my 1996 Elite (?).  ........and I know the dimensions of the miggy box is next to useless for what I need to put in there!

Anyway, did the miggy have such a thing (or am I getting confussed again!)?

If it did or didn't, is there a way to rig up the a/c / cc system to provide such a facility?

I do miss the cold cans of Coke (nothing stronger)! ;D 8-) 8-) 8-)

I believe there's a mention of it in my owner's handbook, but there's clearly nothing of the sort in the car.  :(

Must have been dropped on later models, I reckon.

You want summat like this Lizzie.....

http://www.next.co.uk/shopping/electric/car/1/8

Ive got a similar one......only prob is where to put it so it doesnt fall about on the move.....

I keep meaning to screw a piece of perpex down to the carpet just in front of the driver seat up against the prop well, then using double sided sticky pads stick it down to the perspex.......tho there may be better fixing points on the one in the link......the one i have just has 4 little rubber pads to sit on.......doesnt stop it moving about tho.

The small gloveboxes on later omega's wouldnt be because of he passenger airbag fitted would it?  :-/

I can only think that if your gonna fit a prefacelift glovebox.....you might have to loose the airbag  :-/

Ah ok  :y Didnt think a 12yo omega would have a passenger airbag.

Mind you still not sure a prefacelift glovebox would fit, if its much bigger than a facelift one.....its a bit tight behind the glovebox.....i know ive taken mine out......ie ventilation piping.....wiring loom tray and of course the blower fan.

I don't think so Taxi Driver, as my 1996 Elite did have an air bag arrangement exactly like that on my current facelift CDX :-/ :-/

Good idea!  I could go to my local friendly Vx specialist scrapper
and get a chilled box, with the pipes......then see if my facelift does have a spare a/c 'T' pipe connection to hook up said box.

I really want to do this project as I want that chilled facility!  It is first on the list of outstanding works for August / September;
                fit cool box if poss.
                fit self dipping int. mirror
                fit rear blind
full major service inc. breathers etc.
                replace cam belt
..........and anything else money/ time allows me to do.  :y :y :y

I d my glove box out last week there is a knock out in the back of the glove box about 20mm dia as TB said my pre mini facelift CD had the option it had a little slide to open and close to allow the chilled air in to it .
But as already mentioned you wont be able to get a can to fit in there anyway  ;D

It could be worse; a 1970 / 80s Renault.  Once helped a male friend do his exhaust pipe that was wrapped all around the engine and designed that way!! We had to cut each section away from the engine, then fit the new one back in reverse order!  Bloody nightmare! ;D ;D ;)

My mini face lift Elite does NOT have chilled glove box either.
Lizzie if you find where the chilled air came from & adapt your face lift I'd be interested to know.
I'll have to remember to look in the scrapyard when I get another drivers door window -  there are about 3 in the yards near me, inc a Polish reg'd estate.

American cars would........so why then did GM drop the cool box from the miggy???  Perhaps it was the thought that the Brit's don't need one........their cans of larger go down so quick they would never be allowed to chill anyway! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

I'm sure that, as has been said, that early cars did have a chilled glove box, but was dropped for miniface lift - I have a broucher somewhere - Perhaps GM didn't see the need to chill a glove box that you could now only get a Curly Wurly in!  :y

Thanks Andy, but I have now confirmed that my 1996 Elite did have a chilled glove box, but was dropped when the facelift came along, although the mini facelift apparently did have one.  Why, who knows!  But they could have had a redesign to increase the box size.

but my 99 MINI facelift doesn't, the cut out is there ready to be punched through though. I did have a quick look arond the ducting to see if there was something similar to the senator's air take off but couldn't find owt! It's all by the way at the momment though, as per another thread last week, I need more R134a. I lost the last lot. It's going back in the morning for hime to have another look. I can see this costing me - condensor or compressor are my guesses.
