Title: H/g update
Post by: raywilb on 18 July 2016, 10:01:04
it looks as if I may have made a right cock-up. I took the cylinder head to be pressure tested & skimmed this morning, & the engineer told me it doesn't look as if anything is wrong & in his experience he would say it has not had a blown gasket. I don't know why I did this but last night I decided to have another close look at the oil cooler. I stood it in a container upright & blocked the outlet pipe up. I then put a funnel into the inlet pipe & gently filled it with water. I had removed all traces of oil from the filter prior to doing this. any way the outcome was I'm 90% sure the water was seeping through. I told the engineer & he is going to test that first, I showed him the spot I thought water was coming through & he said it should not be, so if it is the oil-cooler & Ive removed the head, sump, oil- pan, timing chain cover & all other bits & pieces. not forgetting cost of all replacement gaskets & bolts. the water pump was knacked so got away with that one, as oil seal on crankshaft did need replacing. :'( :'(

Yes and no, It's only a cockup in hindsight. The charge of the Light Brigade would have been a great military victory if they hadn't been killed. If you dismantle your engine, find the fault, then reassemble and it works, treat that as a victory and a success.  :)

if nothing else my toolbox has got bigger, 1/2" female torx sockets ( I only had 3/8th ) a set of torx spanners for those awkward 12e bolts that are on the back of the sump where a socket is no good, not forgetting a 1/2" drive angle gauge that I'm awaiting delivery of.  :y

But the oil cooler has pressurised oil in it, coolant systems are not pressurised to even close to that of the oil system.

Hence if it was failed you would be getting oil in the water and then with the engine off, some water in the oil.

Did you have oil in the water?

The trouble is I probably wouldn't have noticed if I had.  at the moment there is no coolant in the system - however I have just taken the header tank off & there is a black film on a large area inside. the coolant that did first come out is pink although cloudy. a bit like a pint of scrumpy as opposed to bulmers, if that makes sense. initially I never noticed oil in water as I wasn't looking.  would a smell be evident if oil cooler was iffy, as I recall now I detected something - reminded me a bit of hot atf.

Engine Oil in the Coolent normally ends up looking like a coffee brown goo'y mess, normally ends up floating in the Header Tank.

I was once given some industrial de-greaser so I have blocked all three outlets  & poured some into header tank, & just been to have a look & its a coffee coloured now.
