Title: Heater Matrix Blow out
Post by: vauxsky on 31 July 2016, 22:11:07
Hi, I have just had a Heater Matrix blow out going down the M1 at 70 miles an hour. At first I thought a wasp had gone down my Doc Martins boots, it was f***ing painfull. I pulled over to the hard shoulder to see what the problem was, and then I could see the coolant in the foot well.  My mate recons the pressure temperature was probably at 100 degrees C when it hit the side of my leather boot, if it had gone direct to the skin it would have burnt my ankle to the bone.

As you may be aware you cannot see the Matrix due to the dash/facia, its hidden, although if you remove the centre consul you can just see the two aluminium pipes that connect to it. I could not tell whether the seals had broken, there did not seem very much coolant at these pipe connections.

I have just finished removing the whole dash/facia, I can see coolant along the lower side of the Matrix, so I'm presuming its blown  - enjoyable job, will put some pictures up for you to see when I'm done.

Here's my first question if somebody could advise, what is the OEM manufacture of the Heater Matrix for the Omega, mine a 1998 Elite 2.5 V6, as I'm going to buy and put a new one in. After taking the dash/facia out its the least I want to do.

Cheers for any feed back.

Somewhere on here there is a how to/help on changing the heater matrix without taking the dash out....it does require carefully cutting the centre console side part and folding back to be able to get at the matrix to slide it out,but maybe would have been easier to do it that way..

Hi, yes I saw it, but I could not bare to cut the dash like that. I have taken one out before so I know its a pain.

DO you know what OEM manufacturer the Matrix was made by.

cheers

I believe Delphi made them, but have fitted Nissens to good effect ;)

The cutting method,if done carefully is almost totally invisible and saves a who;e load of work.

With care it takes about 2 hours although it is quite fiddly and you are working in an awkward space.Remember to replace the 2 rubber 0 rings on the coolant feed pipes into the matrix ,these being VX only .

I replaced mine on old Elite after similar issues and was very pleased with the finished result.Fitted Nissens from ECP cost about £35 several years ago...0 rings were about £3 each :o
