2000 petrol 2.5CDX estate
This is the car I bought at Clacton July 2015 that was cobbled together in Portugal to tow a caravan back to England. I have been hearing an irregular squeal on braking, not at speed, but as the car comes to rest. I checked, then changed, front pads, no change. I then checked rear brake pads, they looked OK too. Then I noticed the o/s pad steady spring looked unusual, and not seated too well. I replaced the steady spring with Vx spring, tested the car; still squealing. I then looked at the n/s rear brake, it had a similar steady spring, so I replaced that one too. Drove it 40 miles, it has not squealed again. I hope I have cured it.
Picture of o/s brake and steady spring follows. Is this an Omega spring or a foreigner?

Impossible to tell make, but I have a couple of GM ones with pins here, for non-vented. If you want them, PM me your address.

Thanks TB. I'll test it further, if the squeak is gone I will accept your offer.

Bother. It's still squealing. I'm running out of ideas. Might it be the front discs?

Have you tried a smear of copperslip to the back of the pads as that usually stops the squealing

That was my first idea; I removed front pads, cleaned and greased pad mounts, greased back of pads and location edges, and reinstalled. When that failed I fitted new pads.
This car had had many a squeal. The aux belt squealed too, that took some finding.
