Title: aux belt tensioner
Post by: raywilb on 13 August 2016, 18:33:06
I bought a belt tensioner from ecp and fitted it. I used the same bolt & I thought it was queer the bolt got tight & I had to put washers on it to avoid doing thread damage. when I put the belt on it sat a little bit proud of the actual tensioners wheel whilst being ok on all the other pully,s. I know its an easy fix by putting a 8mm or so shim behind the the two fixing points to bring it more inline with the pulleys & allowing the belt to sit fully on the tensioner wheel

It's easier to repack the bearing with hm grease.

I need to bring it out from the engine a bit to enable that pulley on the tensioner to fit the belt squarely on it , at the mo the belt is slightly proud of roller,.

Sounds more like they've supplied the wrong tensioner. After all you shouldn't have to pack it out with anything for it to fit properly.

It doesn't fit.

Take it back & get your money back.

From memory a genuine one is £35 from a VX dealer.

Second that, get the correct part - if the belt breaks it could take the cam belt with it  :D

Isn't a 2.2 diesel chain driven?

But you are all correct, the pulley should just bolt on with no alignment issues. The part  the OP has been supplied is wrong and he should return it.

Interesting comment, Biggriffin. I have suffered two tensioner bearing siezures, most embarrassing. Would you recommend greasing the bearings as a service procedure, say every 40000 miles, like cam belt change intervals? I take the tensioner off changing a V6 cam belt, greasing it then would be trivial.

It is.
For the few seconds it takes to pry the seals off and add a smear of grease, there is no reason not to do it.

Thank you gentlemen. I do not have the DVD, and the guide just says watch the DVD. I learned to change V6 cam belts from Haynes and Doc Omega on the Yahoo site before I mastered this site. I shall grease the aux belt tensioner henceforth.

Undo 15mm nut, take pulley, off, prise cover off bearing, re-pack with grease. Installation is the opposite of removel. :)

I went back to ecp yesterday to show them how the belt didn't seem to sit right & also buy a new belt. I got back to the car & it didn't start, the drive belt was off & as I had no tools with me I had to be recovered. anyway I put a 4mm thick washer/shim  behind the top bolt & now  glad to say the new belt sits right  :y
