Title: Water stains.
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 29 August 2016, 12:02:25
Not the type STMO suffers with but water marks on black paintwork. ;)

Best way to remove them?

They really show up on black.

Also.....once you have got rid of them how do you prevent further water marks from rain and after washing the car?

Don't wash it with tap water, that will cause streaks & stains. Use rainwater collected in a butt or similar, using proper car shampoo rather than nicking the wifes Fairly liquid.
Then good quality wax polish which will last several washes before it needs waxing again.
Obviously the two bucket washing method is mandatory.

If you read Mr Omegamans post half way down the last page on this thread he recommends Obsession wax for dark cars. Looking at the pics of his car it looks like it could be a good product.
Around £60 a pop I believe, but it lasts a long time andI would think it would be an investment to keep a car like yours looking pristine.  ;)

Get the staff to wash it while its raining.

Or get a 200L water butt, let it fill with rainwater ( free) and wash car with that, then dry off with a clean damp microfibe cloth, then get a cummly wench in a skimpy bikini to wax it(sis in law) for Mr opti. ;D

Thanks.

I use warm tap water and turtle wash car shampoo. Drying and waxing a car after washing it seems too much like hard work for my liking.

All water left on the car after using the hose (I can't be arsed to dry it) leaves dirty water stains that are not easy to remove.

I tried a vinegar/water solution and this did remove the water marks. Not much fun though.

So water direct from God(rain) is less likely to leave water marks than water from the tap/hose?

Is there a filter that can be attached to the hose that would help?

I have one of these for the bedroom. ;)

I instruct  a 'comely serving wench' to deal with more menial chores. :)

With all the dust, sand, dirt, chemicals and other particles that it flushes from the sky as it falls to earth? Seems unlikely.

Tap water depends on your area, the hard water around here leaves all sorts of marks if you don't leather it off immediately. That's much less of a problem in soft water areas.

Personally, I don't worry too much. My car gets three or four coats of polish early in the year, and I hose it down when it gets too grubby to look at. It's not a shiny new toy like yours though.

On a car like that you should only be using a high quality spring water for washing it.   :)  A few bottles of Evian should do the trick M'lud!  ;D

For drying, a microfiber towel used to lay on the paintwork and patted to soak up the water, rather than rubbing.
You need to spend some time on detailing sites. ;)
So do I actually, but Im worried I will become obsessed and spend all my time / money on keeping a 14 year old car looking really shiny.  :)

Not while there's still a hole in my arse! There are plenty of things I could more usefully obsess about than cleaning cars ::)

You can get a hose connection for the water butt, allowing you to feed a pressure washer with it. :y

My first Omega was a sort of dark grey. Excellent for hiding the dirt. I knew it needed washing when I couldn't walk past it without getting my trousers dirty :y

My current Omega is that rare metalic silver (147?  :-\) It is so dirty at the moment that I don't like to park in sight of the office  :-[

This. I actually have a 200 litre water butt suspended in the rafters of my garage. Rainwater gets pumped up there until it's full, then it gravity feeds a Karcher nicely. If you live in a hard water area, you'll notice much less residue on the paintwork after washing, but you still need to dry off a dark car with a chamois for best results. No way round that, really, although you might find it easier to blow the water off with an airline, perhaps?

Alternatively, if you have a water softener, use softened water to wash and rinse your car.

The water leaves a residue on the paint as it dries, so the trick is to reduce the residue in the water in the first place (soft water or rain water), then remove as much of the water from the paintwork as you can before it's had a chance to dry.

Strange that,as I have bought Turtle Wax shampoo as was on offer in halfrauds and for the first time ever it has dried all streaky so I put it down to the shampoo...orible stuff.. :) :)

That's a neat idea - might have to steal that for the new garage (there is a water feed but you can't get better than free water). Might have to unblock the gutters first mind as in the downpour on Saturday most of the water was going over the top of the gutter, not down the downpipe ;D

And my new black car is also covered in water spots now - but that's from the rain. Who would buy a black car?  :-X

I just have a normal water butt "diverter" in the downpipe but had no room for a butt there, so the outlet goes through the wall into an old 20L oil container on the garage wall, which is maintained "nearly full" by the diverter.

A caravan "whale" pump then pumps the water up into the water butt each time the 20L container gets full, until the butt is full.

All controlled by a rudimentary logic system consisting of 3 float switches and a relay. :y

A decent shower will fill the butt from empty and you can get loads of washes from 200L.

Therein lies a lot of your problems, not drying it off after washing especially if using tap water in a hard water area is always going to leave water stains behind, more so if you've washed it in direct sunlight. If you can't be bothered to do a "proper"job on it take it to the Kosovans[or whoever]bung them a fiver and it's job jobbed!

After washing rinse the car with an open ended hose and then dry with a drying Coth I also use a quick detailer at this stage to shine it up and get rid of any water spots.  You can buy a filter but can not remember what the one I have is called....Other than that you could set up an ro system where you buy a vessel with some media that gives you demin water. Hope this helps.

Nah....she`s way too skinny these days  :-\

No point in buying a nice car like that and not cleaning it properly  ;)

Since I bought the Zed I`ve been cleaning it regularly using snow foam, Meguiers NXT car wash and then dry with a proper drying towel, your Jag will probably need two  :y

I'm taking the easy way out to the water spots, Opti - paying someone to come and detail the car over two days.. wash, paint correct, ceramic seal, wax, etc. A man of your means can surely easily afford such treatment for your fine looking Jaguar..

[edit] Of course I'll still have to wash it every week but at least the crap will come off more easily!

Ahhh washing the car, don't really have to bother with that when your car is worth about as much as a Mars Bar and a packet of cheese and onion crisps.

Not washed the 2.2 in at least the last 6 months, not sure if I've washed the car this year.  :-\  ;D

Aaron, being one step up from total destitution I don't have the financial  means to 'get a man in'. However, I have invested in a couple of micro fibre cloths  to dry the car after using a good quality car shampoo.  I have also bought this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00JOVJKZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00JOVJKZW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

What a good example of marketing drivel. It's got the lot, long names strung together from buzzwords ( serum, ultra, nano), a wanky "technical" company name and minute quantities at ridiculous prices for "professional" use.

I think you need something more like this, Opti: http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/gtechniq/crystal-serum-light-exo-kit.aspx

What a good example of marketing drivel. It's got the lot, long names strung together from buzzwords ( serum, ultra, nano), a wanky "technical" company name and minute quantities at ridiculous prices for "professional" use.

Not for the 'rubble remover Ranger' surely? :)

Pretty stylish for a 'load lugger'. :y

So after a day and a half the detailing is finished - paintwork is now flawless with zero swirls, marks or blemishes; you can use it like a mirror.

The "SiRamic" coating is also so anti-stick that when I went to stick the PistonHeads logo on ... it won't stick  ;D ;D ;D

Does it? :-\  You still have to wash a black car after every journey to keep it looking pristine. It just takes a bit less effort if you've treated it first.

I could never own a car like yours. I wouldn't want to leave it anywhere other than in a locked garage. Can you imagine concentrating on your shopping when you just know some bastard is going to rub up against your shiny black car with their dirty coat or, even worse, their pooch is going to piss on your wheel.  ;D

Yes....you should. Being the magnanimous chap that I am, I will swap my practical estate for your impetuous purchase. I will carry the burden of constantly living in wellington boots and oil skins whilst emptying a small reservoir each week in the name of a clean car.

PM me your address. I'll remove the dogs crate and soiled towels and drive down at the weekend.  ;D

There's a garage I know of that since the EE's set a car wash up down the road, sell their 'Gold Wash' on the automatic car wash for £3!  :y

So when I'm in the area I always put the old girl through and it's the only time she gets a wash pretty much!  ::)  ;D

Put the Beemer through it the other day and she scrubbed up very nicely indeed!  8)

A few years ago I found a dead rat. He was a big bastard, so much so that I measured him.

Eleven inches for the body and nine inches for the tail (or the other way around)
