I've the opportunity to purchase a 2008 Passat Estate TDi. One owner. Full MOT, immaculate in and out, but 200k miles, for £1400. 6 speed manual.
What's wrong with it?
It's gutless. Little if no turbo assistance.
I'm assured -
No smoke or knocks. Good gearbox and clutch. No warning light.
Worth a punt? I'm considering it for my uncle rather than me, as I may have something new coming quite soon :y

I don't mind playing with Diags and owing v small jobs like hoses, but worth noting I'm not able to do anything remotely heavy or strenuous. Although I guess we have Serek for that! :y

Bit weird if the turbos not working and theres no black smoke on boot down?
Ive had a broken as in snapped tubo shaft and stuck veins on these.

The lack of smoke points to an electronic boost control issue to me?

Cam and follower wear most likely... Budget for a top end rebuild and sell it :y
Expensive IMHO.

Thanks mate :y

Just to add... I won't be doing that. I was hoping to source it as a nice surprise for a relative, but as my physical capabilities probably stop at changing a sensor at present, I won't be game for top end work :y

As a first step try and drive it with the maf disconnected,if its faulty they'll often run better without it connected

The Fiat Skudo I had, the shaft snap in the turbo, didn't smoke with the 'go faster' pedal on the floor....it was also gutless, without the turbo working.....so imo could be the turbo. If it is the turbo....I would say don't buy it....the turbo in the skudo died because of oil starvation (the oil strainer was blocked with crud) .... the engine after the turbo was replaced....died a death a few thousand miles later, probably because of crud in the oil ways :-\
Mr DTM made a comment to me, that if the turbo has died the engine wont be far behind! Unfortunately for me, he made that comment after my engine had died...

Now you know why a an 8 year-old £30k car is 'worth' £1400. Which is a maximum of £1000 if they've had some quotes to fix it.
Cheap, used diesels are hard to justify buying if they're working OK. Ones with existing faults are scrap.
