Title: Weird sort of day
Post by: 78bex on 15 September 2016, 21:47:27
Weather wise anyway, stopped at my usual lunchtime haunt overlooking Langstone Harbour.
About midday it was very warm, the water was high & still  :)  I could see the fish takin flies off the surface.
High up somewhere  I could hear a shrieking bird call.
The bird calling got nearer & I thought I could see a buzzard circling. This bird was much smaller then a buzzard but all the other birds went very quiet.
A young collared dove landed on the top off the sea wall quite close about 20 feet away, the next thing I was aware off was a wooshing noise that got louder.
In front of me the bird that was calling overhead was now diving high speed left to right from seaward. It hit the dove with such a force that only a few feathers & blood spatters remained on the top of the wall  :o I was quite stunned for few seconds.
What ever that bird was, he was about twice the size off the dove & extremely powerful.

Sparrow Hawk ? Not huge, but about twice the size of a dove. Kestrels are quite small, so unlikely.
