I have noticed that the boot release button on the central console on my 3.2 saloon has gone very 'sticky'. I have read this is quite common when the rubberised finish deteriorates. Cleaning it has no effect at all.
How do you remove the switch - does it involve taking the NCDC radio out first?
Better still, can the cover (the bit that has gone sticky) be removed and replaced if I can get a better one from a breaker? I have removed the ashtray, and with a mirror can see one (of probably two) yellow lugs by the cover that I assume need releasing.
Haven't asked as yet, but anyone know if the complete switch (or cover) is still available from VX?
TIA.

Just new switch, replaced the hazard one before. Should simply pull out :)
I left radio in position.

Just pulls out, but is tight. Don't lever against adjacent one, else you'll damage that as well. Is easier to remove radio
Facia bit not available separately, so just swap whole switch

I use two tiny flat metal strips with the ends bent over to hook behind the button. The hooks have to be short enough to slip between the adjacent buttons without scratching them (too much).
I can't remember where the strips came from but they look suspiciously like the blades from the tweezers that you get in a little Swiss army pen knife :-\

Sheet steel from a baked bean tin would probably work just as well (after a bit of fettling)

Thanks all for the advice. I have ordered a new one from VX with the thought that if mine is knackered, then by the time I search the scrappies, any that are still in a car probably will have suffered the same fate.

Could try flat radio removal keys

If you're going to replace one switch I usually use a flat blade screwdriver against this one to hook under and remove the one next to it.
You only damage the one you're going to replace doing this.
Then you can get the screwdriver flat under the switch you're going to replace and that comes out.

Picked up the replacement switch today. With the ashtray out, removal of the old one was easy - finger under the lower edge of the switch and a gentle pull with a slight upwards wiggle, and out it came. The replacement just pushes in. Easy! Don't know why I thought it was going to be difficult....... Thanks for all the suggestions though...
