Title: Is it not possible....
Post by: Webby the Bear on 02 November 2016, 19:53:51
.....to measure the power output of a automatic omega?

I understand from here that dyno isn't possible for autos. so is there any other way?

How do you think Americans do dyno runs, when approx 97.85639360% of their cars are automatics?

Take the motor out and mount it on an engine dyno :y

Don't give him idea's  ;D

I believe that its run up on the roller's, then the tech2 is used to lock the torque converter, or something like that.

My brother put his 9-5 auto on the dyno, so it seems likely that an Omega could do it too.
OT it has 292 whp  ::) 8)

So I've read, people have had their autos are dyno'd but the gearbox 'kept changing down' which doesnt make a whole lot of sense, as you can lock the box into 1st, but not really sure how dynos work. As I understood it, you rev it, then let the revs die off, the resultant 'drag' is used to calculate a figure (bhp / hp being a mathematical figure, it's not 'real' in the same way a second is, it's not like lb/ft or 14.5 Newtons etc) HOw, however, that relates when you use an auto, as you say, the TC is a completely different kettle of fish.

That's my knowledge of this pretty much exhausted.  :D

There is something in TIS, you can use  Tech2 to lock the torque converter.

So we need someone with a Tech2 to turn up on a pre-arranged Dyno day, then  :)

:D Oh, come on, admit it, you want to know if your motor manages to push out over 100bhp, or not!  :D

Oi tosser, my car has a proper gearbox so no need for any tech 2ing on mine  :P :P ;D

And giving the way it came back from Skegness last Friday evening, i'd say its got pretty much the full 218 horses  ;)

Just realised something  :(

Haha tossers!

As said I'm not getting in to this. However. Does anyone know of a place that can do this?

DBG, the reason 1st gear isn't used is that you want as close to a 1:1 gear ratio as possible to eliminate the mechanical torque advantage of gearing.. easy in a manual, whack it in 4th gear and go. Bit of a problem with a slushbox though.

Webby, go to Northampton Motorsport. They won't have a tech2 but they are knowledgeable guys..

Ahhh, thanks! that makes senses (and thereby makes it obvious why theres a tech2 means of locking the TC)  :y
