Title: TomTom will no longer update older models
Post by: Entwood on 24 November 2016, 23:32:12
I know a few folks use TomTom satnavs so this may be of interest to them ... from another site I frequent ... this is the tomtom announcement

"JUST ANNOUNCED:-

CHANGES TO MAPS AND SERVICES UPDATES FOR OLDER DEVICES

Click here to see which products/categories this applies to.
WHY WE NEED TO DO THIS
Throughout the last 12 years, we have continuously improved the quality of the maps and software used by your navigation device. However, the internal memory required to install these higher quality maps increases every year.

While we work tirelessly to launch new technologies and deliver a great customer experience, it has become clear that some of our earlier generation navigation devices do not have sufficient internal memory to store the latest maps and features.

HOW IT WILL AFFECT YOUR DEVICE
For affected devices (see the full list of affected devices), from November 15, 2016:
You will not be able to buy new maps or services.
You will also not receive new software updates.
Your trusted device will continue to function as it does now, but your map will become out-of-date and navigation will be less accurate.
However, this may be the perfect opportunity to discover what our new range of navigation products has to offer you.
You can find more information on our latest devices here: tomtom.com/en_gb/sat-nav/car-sat-nav/

MAP UPDATE SERVICE AND LIVE SERVICES
You will continue to receive your map updates and LIVE Services updates until the end of your subscription. You will not be able to renew the subscription after it has ended.

HOW TO INSTALL A MAP UPDATE

To be able to install map updates on one of the devices listed below, you may need to free-up internal memory that is currently used by other content on your device, for example voices and POIs. If there is still not enough space, you have the following options:

Install a map zone (see video)
Insert an SD memory card to extend the storage space of your device (available on some devices only)

LIST OF AFFECTED DEVICES

GO 300 (M1) GO 730 (J3) ONE 125 (PA/PE/PH/PN/PV/PP)
GO 500 (M3) GO 750 (W8) START (XA/XC)
GO 510 / GO 710 (V5) GO CLASSIC (B1) XL 30 Series (RH/RO/RQ)
GO 520 (M2/M4) ONE 1st Edition (G1/G2) XL IQ Routes ² / XL Classic (GG)
GO 530 (J1/J2) ONE 2nd Edition (E1/Z1/Z2/Z3)
GO 540 (WT) ONE 3rd Edition (Y1/Y3/Y5/Y8)
GO 550 LIVE (W3) ONE XL (L2/L3/L4/L7/L9)
GO 715 (M7) ONE XL HD TRAFFIC (F3) "

(numbers in brackets are the first digits of the serial number on the device)

View is a cynical one in that TT have dumped older devices just before Xmas, so that folks who own them ask friends/family for a replacement as a pressie .. :(

My VERY old original GO700, that "somehow" :) "thinks" its a GO940 and now has the very latest map [Europe - West (Nov 2016)] on it still works as advertised ....  :)

I'm alright for the moment, mine has sd card, so be fine for a while, .
It isn't the roads that change, it's all the other crap they put in as extras, mainly poi's. And the now famous "gps fix" update, which when updated usually breaks up lots of devices' until a new 'gps fix' is released,
TomTom wanting people to buy new devices' for Christmas, no they wouldn't. Also you can buy a decent 7" full European sat-nav on eBay for £40.00. :o

I find the quote " customer satisfaction" laughable from the service I received when the tomtom I owned went up in the air. Motherboard failure. Thre months before they finaly agreed to take it back

Typical rip off from companies nowadays, they must have forgot to programme it so that it becomes obsolete after a given time.

No money for manufacturers  in things that work forever  :o

Luckily does not affect me as I use the Pug with built in sat nav (with free 5 year updates) for any journeys other than to the fun factory where I spend my working hours

I have a 10 year old basic Garmin which I have never updated and it still gets me from A to B!  :y

Although it has thrown a wobbly when I've driven on new roads and it thinks I'm driving across fields!  ;D  But seeing as we don't build new roads very often in this country and it's only happened twice, I'll live with that.  :)

We very rarely go places where we haven't been before so don't use ours a lot.

On holiday in Vietnam earlier in the year I found my way from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Nha Trang via Vung Tau and Mui Ne on a bike, which was about 550 kms and just used Google maps on my phone.  :y

You wait till America, turns off all the satellite's, so Putin's hoards can't find there way across Europe, and can't launch there missiles'.
Sat navs will be useless, back to old school maps.

Well that's the rods2 scare story on sat-navs ;D

TomTom are financially in the shit, so they need to do something.  And the market is saturated, and everyone has a smartphone capable of running the freebie solutions like Here (or Google maps if you have a good reception and data bundle)....

...and virtually most family cars have a built in unit now, which will wipe the floor of any shitting portable unit.

TomTom have other navigational income streams, namely teleatlas, so should survive, though could drop out of consumer stuff maybe?

I think Garmin are big in marine navigation.  :-\
