In my search for an Omega I came across a 300 E yesterday. The Omega they had was not what I'm looking for and they had a nice Mercedes so I drove it home on a trial loan at the insistence of the dealer. Boy, does it drive nice! It's in great nick and the interior is really nice too. Very, very nice car. Very tempting. Will have to drop it back this afternoon.
I was wondering if any Omega owners here have had one or maybe still have and could talk about their experiences in comparison to the Omega?

Mr Tilbo owns an E430 if memory serves.
I once owned a CLS500 which is an E class wearing a party frock.

Al also had an E class which (from the passenger seat, anyway) was rather nice.

The CLS is a much newer car. This is 300 E from 1992. A semi classic now I would say. This was from before they changed the names to have the letter before the number. So it's 300 E instead of E300 or E430.
I must say I really like it and if you go by what Mercedes fans say this generation of cars is the last one built to last by Mercedes.
What I fear is parts prices and maintenance costs. But many will tell you if it's a well sorted one almost nothing will go wrong with it apart from expendables.

I wish you would research things properly. Mercedes parts prices are no worse than GM.
Older Mercedes are mechanically bombproof and more corrosion resistant than GM cars of a similar vintage. Buy a meticulously maintained one with minimal electrical toys and look after it... Be the last car you ever buy ;)

I had a 280TE estate petrol automatic in the early 90s, it was I believe built in the mid/late 80s and was/is the best car I have ever driven by a country mile.
As you say, it was when Mercedes really excelled and I dont remember parts or servicing costs being particularly onerous.
Used to get 31mpg on a long cruising run, and thats at 70/80mph, but obviously low-mid 20s around town.
Quick, extremely comfortable very spacious and seemingly untroubled by the amount of weight it was sometimes required to carry.

You know the Jaguar saying, if you can't afford a new one you can't afford an old one, right? I have heard it a few times about Mercedes too. But like Migv6 said, probably just urban myth. I was never really interested enough in Mercedes to research though. Not till yesterday anyway. :)
Minimal electrical toys you say? So this one is a fail! It's loaded to the roof with everything. I mean everything. Full leather and all the toys! The works! Should I not buy it because of all the gadgets?
I got an extension till tomorrow by the way, so I still have it with me now.

They aren't particularily bad for rust, but a car of that age will rust over time. 190,s have known rust spots (jacking points mainly) just like most other cars, but most other cars don't make it to 26 years old.
Havent heard of galvanised Merc shells. My 1990 Merc certainly doesn't seem to have one.
Later Mercs approx. 98 - 03 were appalling for rust. Five year old examples could easily have chassis legs barely attached to the car.
In my experience, older Mercs don't suffer badly with electrical troubles, but its best to check carefully with any old car.
Personally, I wouldn't be worried about buying one with plenty of toys. If things go wrong there are always plenty of cheap second hand spares available.

All the toys is nice, it's simply that there's then more to fix...
That said, the toys make the interior a very comfortable place to be, especially the electric seats 8)

I have had a 1993 190e which was excellent bought the E430 last year to replace the Omega, the Merc is a 2000 & is totally rust free & has now only covered 34,000 miles I have every receipt for services ( all MB ) and seem very reasonable. I have just had the oil & filter changed again by MB Mobil 1 fully synthetic which is recommended for the V8 models. I think if you can get a good one they are excellent do not be put of by cost of parts MB are very reasonable & give discounts for older models.The model you have is considered to be one of the best in MB circles.My V8 returns between 23-30 mpg.

Don't be put off by this enjoy it , mine has every option bar sunroof & all work fine + you feel you are driving something very special mine was just under £56,000 when new so the good older Mercs are a real bargain now. Take a look at MTSV website to get an idea of the marque that's where I bought my E430 from.

Today's Mercedes probably are galvanized. If Vauxhalls from the early 2000s are new Mercedes have to be. :)
But what I read is that the W124, which is the generation of this 300 E, were the best Mercedes for resisting rust. Better than the ones which came before and also after.
Yes I also read the 98 and later models are very bad with rust. But I read that the problem goes till 2006 or 2007.

But I think that would help more in case of a roll over and the like. I couldn't find much info on how it is regarding crumble zones etc. Although according to wikipedia these cars body was designed to withstand an offset-crash in a concrete barrier at some 35mph without serious harm to the occupants and a largely undamaged passenger cabin from both front and rear. A windshield that stays in place and doors easily opened without special recovery tools. Pedals that were moved inversely in a frontal impact (away from the drivers feet and in the direction of the bulkhead separating the cabin from the engine) and door arm rests with deformable elements designed to reduce abdominal injury risk resulting from a side impact.
But anyway, so far it seems that at least compared to the Omega it's probably as safe or more. Even being older it has everything the Omega has but side airbags. It even has traction control. Although the car I have here doesn't seem to have it, which makes me a bit unhappy. As much as we car guys like to think of ourselves as good drivers, I would feel better to have traction control in a RWD car that I intend to have my child in.
The 300 E also have a limited slip differential which most Omegas don't. Although FL Omegas have ESP and this vintage of Mercedes never had.

Yes they do make it much nicer them toys. :)
But do you really use electric seats that much? If you share the car with your espouse I guess it may be useful for the memory setting. But I always saw electric seats like electric mirrors. You set it once and basically never again or very rarely.

Yes this model really seem to have the best reputation of any Mercedes. But just to avoid confusion, it's not mine. At least not yet. I'm test driving it and thinking of buying it. ;)
That's nice Mercedes gives discounts for older models. Do I need to register for something to get the discounts? Is it available when buying online or only at dealers? Would you know if this is limited to the UK? I would think not. But worth asking.

I like fully electric seats as they allow precise adjustment rather than 10-20mm increments they therefore tend to be far more comfortable. ;)
Memory is a convenient addition, but not essential unless the car is regularly driven by several people...
That model might have traction control, be a rocker switch on the same level as the heated rear window switch if fitted, might be marked as a snow chain switch :y

Is yours an auto or manual? This one is a 5 speed manual and I have to say it's a delight. Shifts really well. I had heard that Mercedes manual transmissions were not that pleasing. But this one definitely is. It's nice to have it with the 217bhp the engine gives. It feels quite lively. Probably because the car is so light. I was very surprised to see the weight listed at 3,064 lb. The Omega is 3,373 lb!

It sounds like your perfect car as you'll never find an Omega to the same spec, especially in manual form... Which, incidentally, is a very rare NCO on the W124 8)

Thanks for the tip. I'm packed in for the night and don't want to go down to the garage today anymore. But I will look for the switch tomorrow. Don't remember seeing it.
But reading online about the TC is quite confusing. It seems it was an option and a very expensive one at that. Then they made it standard, then made it an option again. And they had different types of traction control available. I'm probably making too much of traction control. But I remember not thinking much of ESP and that I don't really need it, till I saw a test in Fifth Gear showing the results with and without it. Then I started to become nervous about not having it, till I finally calmed down again. I guess you change once you have a child. :)

Is it? I didn't know the manual was also rare on the W124. I thought they were standard with the auto being the option, unless in the AMGs and 4Matics. Well, all the better then. I really like the shifter. :)

Mine is an auto with tiptronic which I don't bother with just put it in D and go, my 190e was a manual I have to admit I do prefer auto. The discount was given automatically by my local dealership in Boston Lincolnshire, they really like to see older models & are very helpful, I am a member of MB owners club definitely worth joining for the £30 or so per year , monthly mag & great help & articles.
I believe the discount is worldwide not sure about online, once when they did not have an item in stock they delivered it to my home FOC excellent service !

anV6 would have had a four, or possibly five speed auto with standard and economy mode. On the 300E and 300Dt the four speed auto was standard, the manual a very rare no cost option, and the five speed auto was a cost option.
The confusion over the TC is in part because the switch isn't marked as such. Basically it is fitted with a form of TC that, like the Omega, is run via the Abs ecu. It isn't designed to be turnoffandonable, but the system plays havoc with tyrechains if used. So Mercedes, in their infinite wisdom fitted the car with a snowchain switch, which is the same as an off switch only they cannot call it that for fear of misuse ::)
Making TC optional or not is purely down to development... If it's an option people might not order it, but if they do, then you keep it a cost option, and if they don't order it, you want a while and give it away making yourself look good...
It may not have been an option on the manual cars though as you have a clutch to control torque ;) wouldn't worry if it's not fitted though :y

It doesn't have the snow tire button. :(
But I heard the button doesn't really turn TC off? Just withing a certain speed range or something. But it's not completely off. I even read about people just pulling a fuse off to turn it completely off so they could drift. Problem is doing that will also turn the ABS off too.

Traction control generally switches off at 50mph/80kph... Abs works regardless of speed.
Honestly wouldn't worry too much and buy it if you like it :y

The snow button switches the TC off till 25mph. Above 25mph TC kicks in again. This is why people were pulling the fuse off and even making custom buttons to switch it off completely. Bellow 25mph you may be able to do a doughnut. But you can't really drift.
Not that I'm worried about that though. I worry more about it not having one at all than turning it off.

The mileage is not low. 294.000 km. But it looks very nice. Specially the interior. I think it speaks for the quality of these older Mercedes that a car with such mileage could look so new in the inside.
As for buying it, I dropped it back today and told them I would sleep on it.
By the opinions here it seems I should buy it and just forget about the Omega (?). But I'm not sure. I really like the Omega too. I'm not looking for one just because it's good bang for the buck. I truly like it.
I will sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

Sounds to me that it is better than the ideal Omega that you`re trying to find.
Buy it and enjoy it, you can still keep an eye out for the mythical Omega you seek and should you find one then it`s up to you if you want to chop the Merc in for an Omega :y

Good idea, I had a lovely 2.6 Omega CDX which needed absolutely nothing doing to it ,I saw the Merc test drove it and mulled it over for a couple of days before putting a deposit on it, it is in all honesty a much better car than the Omega in many respects, however comfort wise I think the Omega was just as good. The only thing is a well looked after Merc improves with age.😉

Yes, definitely. A W124 in good nick will be an appreciating classic for sure. The Omega will most likely stay where it's at, hopefully not falling anymore. But when you look at the Carlton, the only ones which have any real value is the Lotus and Evolution 500. Not even the 3000 GSi is really selling for good money. So the chances for the Omega appreciating is very low. Not that I care or am buying for that. But since you brought up the subject, it does make for good food for thought when deciding between the Omega and the Mercedes. Although I'm not sure almost 300k on the clock of the Mercedes would get in the way of it appreciating. I don't think it's a problem mechanically though. I have heard they can easily go 500K without a problem.
But I have the impression the Omega is larger inside than the W124? I didn't have both side by side but I seem to remember the Omega had more leg room in the rear seat. Maybe I'm mistaking. The W210 also seems larger than the W124.

Just subtle things to improve it. And once I start spending money and time on it the chances of trading it for an Omega will become lower and lower. ;)
So I must think well about it. Every time I look at a nice picture of a PFL I have to admire it for a moment. I really like it. I think when it comes to the looks I like the Omega PFL better than the W124. But only the exterior. The interior you just can’t compare the Omega to the W124. The ride as well the W124 was much nicer. But I’ve never driven a MV6 though.

There was an article in Mercedes Enthusiast a couple of months ago with two S class Mercs from the nineties, one was a very low mileage one the other a well looked after high mileage car, on a road test they both performed very well & as to the interior there was very little wear showing in the car that had covered over 250,000 miles. I would love to own one from the sixties but they are well out of my price bracket now.

Just an update. I decided to pass on the Mercedes. It's just not what I want. I want an Omega MFL!
It drove nice, the price was OK and it was all good. But it's a little older than what I want. I like the MFL better. It looks more modern and is also more the type of car I'm looking for. The Mercedes drives more like a luxury barge than even the 4 cylinder Omegas to be honest. If it was an AMG then it would be different.
So now with the Mercedes distraction off the table, I'm back to my Omega search. :)
