Title: Shed/rats
Post by: pauls on 29 November 2016, 17:15:18
I have a shed at the bottom of the garden which keep getting rats living underneath. It wasnt built on a concrete base so they just dig under. I keep blocking the holes but they just start another on. I know there is a gap under they so i was wondering if i sprayed under it with sump oil do you thing that would stop them or could anybody surgest something else i could use.

No local cats around? Our garden is very rodent free thanks to Max Cat!

I wouldn't want to pour used oil into my own garden.

Rat poison? Hideous stuff but then rats are pretty hideous.

When the OH 's uncle died his shed had the same problem. It had actually sunk on one corner due to the extensive rat works. The shed was full of them too. Horrible.

If you haven't got a jack Russell, and fire is out of the question then, First you need to find the runs, then put traps, use peanut butter,. and continually, check and dispose of the bodies, also there is obviously a food supply, somewere close, get rid of that, do you have pets(rabbits or a like),is a neighbor feeding the birds, all needs to be looked at, rats only appear when there is food and shelter.

Anyway.............I shall retype my long lost post.

Had the same problem with rats living under the shed. Tried everything from poison to catching them in live traps and "baptising" them.
Nothing worked. They breed faster than you can kill them.
In the end I solved the problem by digging a trench 1 foot deep and the same distance out from the shed, all around the perimiter. Then attached strong steel mesh (£2 a sheet from The Range) to the outside lower edge of the shed and down into the trench. Bend it to 90 degrees at the bottom of the trench so it extends out to the far edge of the trench. Then fill the trench in with hardcore & gravel, with soil on top.
It was hard work, but was the only thing that succeeded where all else had failed.
Just like us, rats cant stand metal on their teeth , so wont try to gnaw through the mesh.

I would set up a box so no dog/cat can get in there and chuck them a nice sunday dinner/chicken then they will bring there mates to the party.....

Then i would serve them something from this site for pudding   ;D ;D ;D

I was thinking along those lines the trouble is i have a neigbours fence along one side and i cant get all the way down the side. The little tinkers seem to have figured this out as its always that side.

I had a similar problem with neighbouring fence. The gap was under a foot, but I managed to force myself in there somehow.
It was a hell of a job getting back out though.  ;D
Worth doing it if its at all possible, as I tried so many things and nothing else worked. They ate a fortunes worth of various poisons, but it just seemed to make them fatter.  ::)
The last one I caught alive had a body a foot long and a tail as thick as my forefinger !  :o
Take care if you are near them, as they are very aggressive if cornered.  ;)

So how do you get rats off an island, hmm? My grandmother showed me. We buried an oil drum, and hinged the lid. Then we wired coconut to the lid as bait. The rats come for the coconut, and... They fall into the drum, and after a month, you've trapped all the rats. But what did you do then? Throw the drum into the ocean? Burn it? No. You just leave it. And they begin to get hungry, then one by one... [imitates rat munching sound.] They start eating each other, until there are only two left. The two survivors. And then what - do you kill them? No. You take them, and release them into the trees. Only now, they don't eat coconut anymore. Now they will only eat rat. You have changed their nature.

Fu kinell, Dr Frankenstein, I don't like the sound of that at all. I would imagine that rat tastes similar to kitten, or puppy, or even baby. You'll create a race of super, flesh-eating monsters.
The daily star would have smugness-filled field day.  ;D

Rats do eat each other if they are short of food. Their survival instinct is extremely strong, and impressive.
The current cold snap should thin them out a bit. Young will die from the cold, and then their parents will have them for supper.  ;D

"Supper"

Now is that a bit posh ? Should it be "Tea", or maybe "Dinner", or even "Evening meal", depending upon where you live, social standing etc. "Supper" in Scotland is not posh, but in London it is. Oh dear where is an etiquette expert when I need one ?

As you are rather urban where you are, go out to a country feed supplier that will do a proper rat poison
